GILLS SIGN EX-PREMIER LEAGUE DUO

3 October 2016

Versatile midfielder Chris Herd and striker Frank Nouble the Gills

Gillingham FC have this afternoon completed the signing of ex-Premier League defensive midfielder Chris Herd until the end of the 2016/17 season, and striker Frank Nouble on an initial short-term deal.

Australian international Herd is a product of Aston Villa’s Academy, and made his Premier League debut in their 2-2 draw against Manchester United in November 2010. He went on to make 42 appearances for the Birmingham club, scoring two goals - one memorably in front of the Kop against Liverpool at Anfield.

Herd has also had loan spells at various EFL clubs, including Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and Port Vale. Capped three times by his country, he made 23 appearances for the Gills’ League One rivals Chesterfield last season, prior to joining Australian A-League side Perth Glory in July.

“Chris’s versatility will be a big boost for us given the relentless nature of the Sky Bet League One season, and I know fans will love his energy and work ethic," said Gills manager Justin Edinburgh. "He brings his Premier League and international experience into the dressing room, which is invaluable."

Striker Nouble began his career at Chelsea, signing for them as an under-12, and progressed through their system before joining West Ham in 2009.

The 25-year-old made 19 appearances for the east London club during a three-year period. During his time at Upton Park, Nouble also went on loan to a number of EFL clubs, including the Gills, for whom he played 13 games and scored five goals during a three-month spell between September and December 2011.

More recently, the London-born striker spent last season at Chinese League One side Tianjin Quanjian. Nouble also represented England at under-17 and under-19 level.

“It’s no secret that we’ve been looking to bolster our attacking options, but getting the right player is vitally important. In Frank, we’ve signed a strong, powerful and determined striker, and we’re delighted to have him on board," added Edinburgh.

“As ever, I’d like to thank the Chairman and Director of Football for their help and support in getting these deals over the line.”
