EDINBURGH: “MIDWEEK WIN HAS GIVEN US A LIFT”

Gills manager Justin Edinburgh spoke to the press ahead of Saturday's Northampton Town game

Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh believes his side’s 2-0 victory over West Brom on Tuesday has boosted players’ confidence ahead of Saturday’s visit of Northampton Town.

Speaking to the press on Friday morning, he feels the Checkatrade Trophy result will lift the Gills squad as they return to Sky Bet League One action at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium this weekend.

“Any game you play you want to win. We’ve endured some tough defeats over last month or so, so it was a lift, a psychological boost.”Edinburgh on…Tuesday’s victory:

“We want another good performance. The level we played at against Charlton Athletic in our last league game will be required again. Northampton are having a good season, they’re a good side, but things could look very different on Saturday. If we get the win, then we’d only be four points behind them, so that crest of a wave they’re on [having won Sky Bet League Two last season] won’t be so big. They’re the fine lines of football; it’s got to be a win, it’s got to be three points.Edinburgh…on building on that win:

“We’ll concentrate on ourselves and we’ll look to put our marker down and play our game, but we’re wary of their strengths and weaknesses as well. I’ll pick the team from the personnel available who I think will win the game and the opposition. That’s no difference tomorrow, we’ll look to take the game to Northampton and hopefully we’ll get result we’re all hoping for.”

Edinburgh on…available players: “We have to be mindful of Brad Garmston, who’s been a long-term absentee, but there could be place for him on bench. Baily Cargill comes into contention and Ryan Jackson has overcome a dead leg from Tuesday.

“Bradley Dack comes back into squad. Max Ehmer, who picked up a knock against Brackley will be OK and Frank Nouble trained yesterday, so we think he’ll be OK. Waggy [Scott Wagstaff] comes into the squad as well.

“We’re certainly getting back to having the strength in depth that we crave in the squad. Whereas it was five or six out [through injury] of late, it’s now getting towards one and two. This gives me options, which is what you want as manager. You want to have to make tough decisions.”
