Gills manager Justin Edinburgh spoke to the media following his side's 1-0 defeat against Oxford United on Tuesday
Marvin Johnson's 32nd-minute goal separated the two teams, but with Cody McDonald and Bradley Dack having efforts cleared off the line, as well as Jay Emmanuel-Thomas hitting the bar and two strong penalty appeals for handball turned down, Edinburgh believes the result was not a fair reflection of the match.
I thought we deserved something out of the game, to be honest. We’ll always be disappointed with the goal we gave away, but in our third-successive away match, we had plenty of chances to equalise. We hit the crossbar, had a couple off the line, and I feel we had two penalties in the first half, and an even more blatant one in the second half, turned down.Edinburgh on...the defeat: "
"In the second half, I felt Oxford defended well, they made it difficult, but I felt we were too anxious and tried to switch the play a bit too soon. We did not put any sustained pressure on Oxford. Away from home, if you have spells like we did tonight, I always feel like we’ll score. Unfortunately that hasn’t come around tonight.Edinburgh on...the performance:
"We changed things around [in the] second half, we put Frank [Nouble] out wide and we tried to get Dacky [Bradley Dack] in central areas to get him on the ball. But they condensed space; Oxford had two banks of four and another dropping into midfield. Maybe we rushed that final pass, but it’s easy to sit on the side and say that."
"We don’t like losing. But I don’t think you can’t fault the players, I’m not going to criticise them. We’ve pushed Oxford hard tonight, and they don’t lose too many games at home."
