Gills manager praises his team’s resolve in 3-2 win at Shrewsbury Town

over Shrewsbury Town at Greenhous Meadow on Saturday.3-2 victoryGills manager Justin Edinburgh spoke to the press after his side’s historic

Trailing 2-0 at half-time, the Gills scored three times in the final 31 minutes to earn their first-ever victory at Town’s new ground.

Edinburgh on…the result: “Credit to the players, in the second half they showed resilience and a togetherness. They’re great qualities to have. To snatch the winner in the last minute of the game was a fantastic achievement. I demand a lot of the players. and when you get that response, it means a lot.

“As a manager, you strive to get those kind of results. It’s the fourth time we’ve come from behind to win already - some teams don’t do that all season.”

Edinburgh on…Jay Emmanuel-Thomas: “For his first, there was a great ball from Dacky, it made the header simple. We felt that if we got the first, we could gain some momentum and get something out of the game.

“The second one left his foot and it’s still going through the sky now. That’s what he’s about; we’ve got to get more out of him, and there’s more to come, but those goals were special.

“We keep scoring good goals here - Ryan Jackson got a good one here last year, too.”

Edinburgh on…goalkeeper Jonathan Bond’s debut: “He made a big save [in stoppage time to deny AJ Leitch-Smith]. They’re the saves that win you points. He probably feels he’s unlucky to concede two goals, and although a lot of his saves were standard, that one at the end was excellent - he was alert and sharp. It gave us the opportunity to go down the other end and look for a winner.”

Edinburgh on…going behind in games: “We’ve got the nip that in the bud, that softness of being nice to play against. I stand there and see their first shot on goal go in; the desire we had to keep the ball out of the net against Watford is something we need to bring into league games. We didn’t show that in the first half today.

“But we’ve had seven games, five have been away. That’s tough. We’ve got players missing. It would have been a huge blow if we didn’t get something out of the game [today]. Coming from two goals behind to win away from home will really galvanise the boys.”
