EDINBURGH: “WE BELIEVE WE CAN CAUSE ANOTHER UPSET”

The Gills manager spoke to the press ahead of Wednesday night’s Tottenham EFL Cup game

Gills manager Justin Edinburgh spoke to the press ahead of Wednesday night’s much-anticipated EFL Cup third round match against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Edinburgh on…the game: “We’re going there because we believe we can cause an upset. We know it’s going to be a monumental challenge, but we’re capable of achieving that.

“Every player, all 14 who play if I make three subs, will have to be a nine or 10 out of 10. They’re capable of that, it’s possible and there’s no point going there just make numbers up and be involved.”

Edinburgh on…using the Watford cup win as inspiration: “This group have beaten a Premier League side this season, so we know upsets can happen. In a one-off game against another Premier League team, we could cause another one.
Watford shows it’s possible. If they can find the level of performance, run the distances they covered without the ball and use it well going forward, the belief will be there, as we know we’ve achieved it before.

"The only time we switched off at Watford is when we conceded, and concentration has to be at an all-time high. If we switch off, more times than not we’ll get punished playing against those players who ply their trade in the Premier League and Champions League week in, week out.”

Edinburgh on…the personal significance of the game: “When the draw came out, there we some big cheers in my house. It’s a special moment for me, but that’ll be within myself. It’s about the players on the day.

"Football careers aren’t normal careers, they’re short, maybe 22 or 23 years on average, and half of that I spent at one place [Spurs]. I’ll see some old faces and good friends, but for me the highlight is going against one of the top Premier League managers.”
