GILLS DRAWN AGAINST SPURS IN EFL CUP THIRD ROUND

24 August 2016

The Gills will face manager Justin Edinburgh's former club after beating Watford on Tuesday

Gillingham's reward for beating Premier League side Watford in Tuesday's EFL Cup second round is a trip to manager Justin Edinburgh's former club Tottenham Hotspur.

Edinburgh made over 200 appearances for Spurs as a player during his 10 years at White Hart Lane, including their 1999 League Cup victory at Wembley. He will take his Gills side to north London next month for only the second meeting between the two clubs; Spurs won the only fixture to date, also in the League Cup, 4-2 at Priestfield in November 1982.

All third round ties are scheduled to be played on the week commencing September 19, between the Gills' Sky Bet League One games away at Port Vale (September 17) and home fixture versus Coventry City (September 24).

The Gills last reached this stage of the competition in 2005, and victory against Spurs will see them progress to the fourth round for the first time since 1996, when they lost at Ipswich Town having beaten then-Premier League side Coventry in a replay at Highfield Road.

Ticket details will be released in due course; full information will appear on the GFC website and the club's social media channels once available.
