PENNOCK: "WE HAVE TO START BETTER"

The Gills head coach spoke to the media before the Sky Bet League One fixture against Rochdale

Gillingham head coach Ady Pennock says his team must be ready from the start in their match against Rochdale on Saturday.

The Gills have conceded in the fourth and third minute in their last two games, against Scunthorpe United and Bolton Wanderers, respectively and Pennock knows his side much start better on Saturday if they are to take three points from their trip to Spotland.

Pennock on…Saturday's match: “We want the players to have that winning mentality and fire in their bellies before they go out. We have to start the game better than we did on Tuesday [against Bolton], that is for sure.

"Rochdale are similar to Bury, and play good football, but they are on a bad run. Like we did against Bury, we have to go there and be positive, start on the front foot and hopefully get three points.

“It’s a difficult place to go. They have just had their pitch re-laid so that will be nice, but it is going to rain all day so the weather will be miserable. I am looking forward to it; hopefully we'll get back to winning ways.”

Pennock on…players and injuries: “Scott Wagstaff, Ryan Jackson and Rory Donnelly will have fitness tests before Saturday. Chris Herd will be out, as will Bradley Garmston and Aaron Morris.”

Pennock on… Sky Bet League One safety: “I think to be sure we need three wins. We have to treat Saturday as a cup final and we want to get the three points.

“If we get to 52 points we should be OK. There is only one team that has gone down with 52 points in history, so if we can get more than that then it will be fantastic. It is a challenge and we have to take every game as it comes, one at a time.”
