BARRETT SIGNS FOR SOUTHEND

15 January 2015

Adam Barrett signs for Southend United after a two-and-a-half year spell at Priestfield Stadium

Adam Barrett has joined League Two side Southend United on a permanent deal until the end of the season.

The 35-year-old recently returned to MEMS Priestfield Stadium following a successful loan spell at AFC Wimbledon, but will now return to Roots Hall after spending six years at Southend earlier in his career.

Between June 2004 and July 2010 Barrett made 286 apperances and scored 29 goals, proving to be an integral part of the team that were promoted to the Championship in the 2005-06 season.

After spells at Crystal Palace, Leyton Orient and Bournemouth Adam joined the Gills in the summer of 2012 on a two year contract.

Following a number of fine displays Adam's contract was extended by a further year, and he went on to Captain the side to the League Two title.

He remained in the heart of defence the following season under both Martin Allen and new boss Peter Taylor as the Gills ensured League One safety, but at the start of the 2014/15 campaign joined AFC Wimbledon on an initial two month loan.

This was later extended to January 5, but Barrett will now return to Essex where Phil Brown's squad are aiming to reach the third tier themselves.

In total Adam made 95 appearances for the club and scored three times.

Everyone at Gillingham FC would like to thank Adam for his services while at Priestfield and we wish him well for the future.
