WILLIAMSON SIGNS FOR CAMBRIDGE

15 January 2016

Gills striker departs to join Cambridge United

Ben Williamson has joined League Two Cambridge United on an 18-month contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 27-year-old striker recently enjoyed a loan spell at the Abbey Stadium where he scored three times in eight appearances.

He returned to MEMS Priestfield Stadium earlier this month when his loan deal expired, however the two clubs have now agreed a deal for a permanent transfer.

Williamson signed for the Gills in the summer of 2015 on a two-year deal after agreeing to leave Port Vale and went on to make 14 appearances in all competitions.

The forward has signed in time to be eligible for Cambridge in their game against Luton at Kenilworth Road tomorrow.

Manager Justin Edinburgh said: "I'd like to thank Ben for his services while at the club, he was one of my signings and I was very pleased to get him on board.

"However the form of Luke Norris, Rory Donnelly and the arrival of Dominic Samuel limited his first team chances and he did very well at Cambridge while on loan.

"Having received a fee for the player I felt allowing him to move on was the right move for everyone involved."

Gillingham FC would like to thank Ben and we wish him all the best in his future career.
