Striker full of belief as Gills look to defeat Bristol City at Ashton Gate
Cody McDonald says Gillingham won’t go down without a fight as the squad look to book a place at Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy National Final.The Gills visit Ashton Gate 4-2 behind after defeat in the first leg to Bristol City, but the striker believes if the visitors can stay in the tie going into the second half then anything is possible.
He said: “We are massive underdogs going into the game but if we can score first they might be sweating a little bit.
“The main thing is that we don’t concede early. If we are 0-0 at half time it’s not a bad situation to be in. As long as we are in the game in the last 15-20 minutes we can have a dabble, go longer and make changes.
“It’s important we don’t go behind early and lose the tie. They are a great attacking team and scored a lot of goals against us at our place so it will be hard to go there and restrict them goals, but we are scoring ourselves so that’s a great sign and they will know that.”
McDonald has never played at Wembley and says the squad will be as determined as ever to turn the tie around.
He added: “It’s not every day you get to play at Wembley, a lot of the lads haven’t played there - I haven’t either so it’s a massive thing I want to do in my career.
“We’ll give it a real good go. We know we will have to perform well; we will have to be on our game from the first whistle to the last whistle.
“It’s Football at the end of the day and anything can happen.
“We won’t go down without a fight.”
