Peter Taylor speaks to the media following Gillingham's 2-1 win over Doncaster as the club records its first away league win of the 2014/15 season
Peter Taylor said the togetherness of his squad and their continuous hard work deserved a first away league win of the season against Doncaster on Saturday.A second half brace from Luke Norris helped secure a 2-1 win at the Keepmoat Stadium, extending the Gills unbeaten run to six matches.
Donny pulled one back via the penalty spot deep into stoppage time but they couldn’t force an equalizer.
Speaking after the game Peter said: “Well we knew that Doncaster have some very good Footballers, we were guessing that they would carry on with the same system and play the diamond shape and they played some very good stuff.
“If they all of a sudden go and score it’s a different game but the longer it goes on I think they maybe get a touch nervous that they’re not going to break us down and sometimes they’re a bit vulnerable to the counter attack because of that.
“I didn’t like us in the first half but in the second I thought we were really really good and based on that I thought we deserved an away win.”
Taylor changed the shape at half time to try and combat the Doncaster attack and he explained why he made that decision.
“I just felt it was easier to defend against the diamond a bit more that way,” he said. “I didn’t think we were doing it that well, they had too many shots in the first half so I felt we would be more comfortable with the shape that we did in the second half and we’ve played that quite a bit so it wasn’t anything new for the players."
Taylor was pleased for the squad to register their first away win and praised Norris for the impact he had on the game.
He said: “We haven’t been that far away to be honest. We’ve played a couple of games where we should have got something and we haven’t.
“But the players have worked extremely hard for each other and that’s why we have deserved some results.
“I said to the Chairman this morning that Norris has looked terrific all week. He’s looked really confident and feels he has a chance of being in the team and playing regularly and that has shown.”
As for the last minute penalty that deprived his side a clean sheet he said: “I’ll have to see it again but I don’t think it was a penalty. I think that’s wrong and the only thing I said to the referee after the game was that it was the longest four minutes I’ve ever known, I could have run a mile in that time!”
