TAYLOR REFLECTS ON CHESTERFIELD DEFEAT

22 December 2014

Peter Taylor was left disappointed on Saturday as Gills narrowly miss out on a late equalizer to maintain unbeaten record

Peter Taylor conceded Chesterfield’s third goal on Saturday inflicted a sucker punch on his team having come from behind to level the match at 2-2.

The visitors had put themselves in a commanding positions thanks to goals from Sam Clucas and an unfortunate own goal from Leon Legge, but Gills responded brilliantly with sub Cody McDonald and John Egan latching onto crosses from Doug Loft to make it a tense final half an hour.

However with Taylor’s men seemingly on the front foot they were undone thanks to an 18-yard volley from Jimmy Ryan which seemed to deflate the hosts as the Spireites took the plaudits in a 3-2 victory.

McDonald had a chance with the last kick of the game, but Tommy Lee made a wonderful save to deny a late equalizer.

Peter said: “I thought the response was good when we went two down, we got ourselves some great character and got back in the game.

“The third was a really poor goal and you then think you’ve blown it. In the last 10 minutes we certainly went direct but I felt we were going to get a goal, we had a fantastic opportunity with the last kick of the match but unfortunately their keeper made a good save.

“I was impressed with Chesterfield, I thought they worked hard as a unit and they made it very difficult for us but I felt maybe late in the game, when we got the equalizer, we looked better than them.”

The Manager was asked if his team should have defended the third goal better, he said:

“We could have done, the first one was unlucky and that was a deflection. The second and third were disappointing – I don’t think we deserved to be 1-0 down at half time.

“We know this is a tough league and you need to be on it for 90 minutes, we were on it in stages. The effort was good at the end, it made for an exciting finish but unfortunately a disappointing one as we lost 3-2 at home.”
