HESS: FITNESS LEVELS IMPROVING

30 July 2014

Andy Hessenthaler praises solid second half display at Salters Lane as Gills cruise to a 6-1 win over Faversham

Andy Hessenthaler praised the team that played at Faversham for a strong second half performance following a slow start to the game.

Gills eventually prevailed 6-1 but fell behind early on thanks to a goal from Dean Grant and had to resist more pressure before progressively taking control and bossing proceedings.

Antonio German (2), Luke Norris, Amine Linganzi, Michael Freiter and an own goal completed the scoring, but Hessenthaler said the players need to prevent early goals having an impact on the game.

He added: “There were some good bits and frustrating bits, another goal that we have conceded early on which we also did on Saturday and we need to start eradicating that.

“We can’t be giving silly goals away – we had the ball with a free kick and got caught out so that was a real negative and in the first 15 minutes our decision making was poor, we didn’t move the ball quick enough.

“But we gradually got better, a few words were said at half time but in the second half we were much better.

“The biggest thing for me tonight was that players got 90 minutes in their legs which is key for fitness levels because we are less than two weeks away from the first game.”

German added to his impressive goal tally during pre-season with two more at Salters Lane, and Hess admitted he’s pushing hard for a starting place at stadium:mk.

He said: “He looked bright and worked very hard – Luke scored aswell from a corner but he put the work rate in and probably missed his easiest chance with a header.

“He should have got a hat-trick but he’s doing well and had a good pre-season and he’s pushing for MK Dons.”
