GAFFER: A THOROUGHLY DESERVED VICTORY

Justin Edinburgh delivers his thoughts as the Gills defeat Swindon 3-0 at the County Ground

Justin Edinburgh said he was absolutely delighted for his players after the Gills secured a stunning 3-0 win over promotion chasing Swindon Town at the County Ground on Tuesday evening.

Two goals from Cody McDonald and one from Jake Hessenthaler secured the club’s first win at Swindon for over 30 years, and the Manager was quick to praise all members of the team after a fine display.

He said: “Extremely pleasing - I think importantly, as good as that performance was, Swindon are a very good side and I learned a lot about my players tonight in terms of response from a setback.

“I’m absolutely delighted for them and thought they thoroughly deserved the victory.

“We knew we had to get about them because if you sit off them they will play around you and they are a good footballing side, hence the reason the position they are in.

“We didn’t allow them to settle, we played very quickly and on the attack and we caused them a lot of problems.

“It was a fantastic team performance, back to front. Luke Norris came on and held the ball up well too; we got back to how we should be playing. Our approach in terms of our closing and pressing keeps us compact and when we get the ball we can pass as good as any team in this league and we showed that tonight.

“As good as the run we’ve been on we surrendered that run disappointingly. I don’t think we deserved to win the game on Saturday but I’m not sure we deserved to lose it.

“But I saw a lot of character from the players tonight and a great response because when you have been on a good run sometimes it’s difficult to overcome that and get back but we certainly showed the response I was looking for tonight.”
