GAFFER POST YEOVIL

Gillingham Manager unhappy as late spot kick denies his side victory at Huish Park

Justin Edinburgh said his side could feel hard done by in not achieving all three points against Yeovil on Saturday.

A controversial penalty was awarded late on for the hosts with Gavin Hoyte judged to have fouled Joel Grant, and substitute Adam Morgan fired home with just a couple of minutes to play at Huish Park to achieve a 2-2 draw.

The Gills boss was unhappy with the decision given, but praised his team for their second half performance.

He said: “I think to get ourselves in the position we did, certainly after a slow first half, we feel very hard done by to have not got all three points today.

“It’s certainly not a penalty; I’ve looked at it again on the DVD. He [the referee] quite clearly waved his hands to indicate it wasn’t a penalty – it’s a foul on Gavin, the boy has gone through the back of him.

“He’s got it totally wrong, not slightly but totally.

“In the first half we would have taken a point, we were slow and had no cohesion and we were certainly second best. We had words at half time and the response was brilliant and we showed great character to score as late as we did.”

Gillingham were 1-0 down at the interval and the Manager admitted words were said which sparked an almost immediate response when John Marquis equalised.

He added: “I was disappointed, I wasn’t happy with anyone really and I felt we were well below the standards we have set. I said at the start of the week it was going to be a difficult place to come and it was going to be a test for us but I think we passed most of the questions posed to us.

“But we need to start faster than we did today.

“With Luke Norris coming on and getting one we have got goals in the team, in the second half we restricted them to a lot of shots from outside the box so there was a lot of improvement in the second half and a lot to be pleased about.

“What I’ve seen today is that we have got character and can overcome a slow start. They are hurting in there but it’s a valuable point.”
