Leon Legge chats to the press after his goal helps to earn Gills a point against Crawley
Leon Legge said the players were disappointed not to come away from Priestfield with all three points following a 1-1 draw with Crawley on Saturday.The centre-back netted his first goal of the season just before the half time interval to cancel out Gwoin Edwards’ opener, but despite creating a number of chances in the second half, a second goal eluded the hosts who in the end had to settle for a point.
Speaking after the game Leon said: "We felt we should have won the game. The first half wasn’t the best but in the second half we should have been two or three goals to the good.
“The first goal came from nothing really but once they got that it killed our momentum a little bit but then I scored just before half time and it gave us a bit more belief and the performance in the second half was so much better and the lads are gutted really.
“The performances are there, it’s just a case of being maybe more aggressive in front of goal – I’ve been in this situation before and you have these spells but then you could go and hammer a team three or four nil.
“That win will come, I know the fans are getting a bit impatient but we are getting there.”
Legge partnered John Egan in the heart of defence and Leon believes the youngster has a bright future ahead of him.
He added: “Me and him started the season together and it’s nice to be back in there – at the moment we’ve got a couple of injuries, I’ve taken my chance and I’m hoping to stay in there.
“He’s young but has got an old head on those shoulders and he will be a player who can definitely play at a higher level.
“It’s almost as if you are playing with an experienced pro.”
Michael Doughty started his first game for Gillingham just a day after signing on loan from QPR, and Legge thought the midfielder impressed.
He added: “He made good forward passes, opened them up a few times and it was a good debut for him. He came in Friday, Antonio German knows him from QPR, everyone greeted him and he got on with everyone.
“We are all together, we have a good bunch of lads so it easy for new players to come in and settle straight away.”
