Gills boss Peter Taylor said he had no complaints with the way his players acquitted themselves against Newcastle United on Tuesday.An unfortunate own goal from John Egan in the first half proved pivotal as United ran out 1-0 winners in the second round of the Capital One Cup at Priestfield, but Taylor said his players did well and worked as a team.
He said: “They couldn’t have worked any harder, and they had to because Newcastle has some very skilful players who ran with the ball so we had to defend a lot.
“The game is all about belief and at times we had that, but at times we didn’t. If you go onto the pitch, whoever the opposition is, you’ve got to go out there believing you’re a good player and do the jobs that you’re in the team for.
“The discipline was terrific and we worked hard as a team, I said to the players I’ve got no complaints whatsoever on that and we need to get back in on Thursday because we have a big game here against Crewe on Saturday.
“They will come off the pitch and I think they will be quite pleased with the way they played. The majority of the boys put in a good shift off the ball but also showed some character on the ball.
“A lot of the fans don’t get the chance to watch Premier players and it’s great that they turned out in such big numbers.”
