TAYLOR: IT'S A GOOD FEELING

16 September 2014

Peter Taylor delivers his immediate reaction following the 2-1 win over Peterborough United at Priestfield

Gills boss Peter Taylor said it was a good feeling to defeat one of the fancied teams in League One following a 2-1 win over Peterborough United at MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Cody McDonald grabbed a brace, one of which from the penalty spot, to clinch a fantastic win for the Gills which maintains their unbeaten home record in the division this season.

Speaking after the game Peter said: “Terrific – we got three points against a very good team and we know we have to work very hard for anything we get at this level.

“So when you beat one of the top sides in the division it’s a good feeling.

“I thought for 15-20 minutes they were very good and maybe thought we didn’t believe enough. All of a sudden I felt we did that a bit more and got better.

“You will always see good passing moves from Peterborough because they are very good at it – at times if you go too high to get it back they could open you up so we decided to let them have it in certain areas.”

Taylor revealed he spoke to McDonald before the game and the conversation had the desired effect as the forward caused problems all evening.

Talking about his first goal, the Manager said how pleased he was for the striker.

He said: “Good finish, I had a good chat with him before the game and said to him that we know he’s a good goal scorer but I felt as though he needed to up his play a little bit, he totally agreed and was very confident it wasn’t far away and got two goals so I’m really pleased for him and that’s the best he’s played tonight.

“We are pleased the penalty went in and pleased we got the points.”

Finally he praised his side for sticking together towards the end of the game when Peterborough were applying pressure in search of an equalizer.

He said: “I thought they stayed together as a group and that’s the most important thing. We are only being realistic, there are other teams in the division who are better than us and we have to work extremely hard as a unit to get anything out of games.

“We hung in there and people did their jobs, sometimes we got a touch tired and got out of position but overall I think for 90 minutes they stuck at their task.”
