WOMEN AND GIRLS UPDATE 13

27 November 2015

Weekly update of what has been happening at the club…..

Gills Ladies continue unbeaten run in the league

Gillingham Ladies returned to action in the FA Women’s Premier League on Sunday November, 22 and were on the road to face Cambridge WFC. The team were looking to continue their impressive run of form in the league. After a dominant display the team returned to Kent with a hard fought and valuable point.

The game started off in competitive style and mid way through the first half Gills Ladies had a penalty appeal turned down then Cambridge WFC turned defence into attack and opened the scoring. Gills Ladies had numerous chances in the second half but Cambridge WFC were united and resolute in their defending under extensive pressure, then mid way through the second half Gills Ladies got the reward for their hard work through Paige Baker-Carroll. The game ended 1-1.

8 goal thriller in the Ryman League Cup

Gills Ladies hosted Tottenham Hotspurs Ladies in the Ryman League Cup on Wednesday November, 25. The first half started with Gills Ladies looking to control the game but Tottenham Hotspur Ladies were clinical with their chances and went in at half time with a three goal lead.

Gills Ladies started the second half brightly and scored two goals and dominated possession, however, Tottenham Hotspur Ladies regained their two goals advantage to take the score to 2-4. The comeback was still on when Gills Ladies made it 3-4 but this was unfortunately short lived when Tottenham Hotspur Ladies slotted a free kick into the back of the net that increased their lead to 3-5 and Gills Ladies exited the Ryman League Cup at the Quarter Final stage.

Gills Ladies Manager Jack Wheeler revealed “We were not at our best in the first half but in the second half we demonstrated we’ve got quality to compete with higher opposition and we really gave them a fright. We can take loads of positives from Wednesday along with some good lessons too.”

The next match sees Gills Ladies continue in cup action in the FA Women’s Premier League Plate away to Lewes Ladies on Sunday, November 29 (kick off 14:00). Good luck girls.

Girls Centre of Excellence

Last week our U17s faced Middlesex FA in the 1st Round of The FA Girl’s U17s Centres of Excellence Youth Cup. The Gills took a well-deserved lead but as they looked to double their advantage they were caught on the break to see the scores draw level. The Gills continued to press and were playing some very impressive football but were unlucky to concede a second when an attacking move broke down. Gills looked for an equaliser but just couldn’t quite find that killer pass and the tie finished 2-1.

U17s Manager, Pete Sayer said, “It was a fantastic team performance and one that deserved more, the girls did everything we asked and were very unlucky to get caught twice for the goals. Football can be cruel like that sometimes but we were very proud of the girls and the professionalism they showed throughout.”

The U17s along with the rest of the squads who come off of some very impressive performance against Arsenal last week, particularly our U13s, will all face Hampshire at home this Saturday. Well done girls and good luck.

U17s GK Katie Startup has been called up for England U17s for a friendly tournament in Germany next month. After impressing all season and at the recent UEFA Qualifiers, Katie will join back up with the rest of the squad to play Germany and France. Well done Katie from a very proud Gills family.

This week our U17s took a night away from training to watch Gills Ladies in their Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur Ladies. Manager Pete Sayer said “The girls are very lucky as they have the opportunity to train alongside the Ladies on a regular basis, but I wanted the girls to watch them in a competitive environment and compare their own understanding, decision making and performance levels.  The girls were treated to a spirited performance from the Ladies with a squad that contained a number of COE graduates, with Madison North, who was only in the U17s last season scoring a superb free-kick.
