The striking sensation famously joined the Gills from non-League Crockenhill for a set of tracksuits and some corrugated iron in 1982 and went on to score 78 goals in 219 appearances for the club.

After departing Priestfield he played for Aston Villa, Chelsea, Celtic and Marseille as well as earning 88 caps for the Republic of Ireland whom he represented at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups.
