VARLEY: IT HAS BEEN FRUSTRATING

Manager Ian Varley has been left frustrated in recent weeks due to the number of games that have been postponed due to poor weather.

It means that his side now have a back log of fixtures they have got to get through, including playing against local rivals on a Thursday evening before playing again the following Sunday.

Talking about the postponements, he said: "It has been very frustrating as again it's disrupted our league campaign which at the end of the day is most important.

"Having said that there is nothing we can do about the weather, we've just got to keep training and be ready for when the game is played, hopefully this Sunday.

"We've not so much prepared for Ashford because we know if we perform as we usually do then we should win the game.

"In most games I tend not to focus too much on the opposition and just concentrate on what we are going to do. I know how the opposition will set up and play by the first two minutes of the game so if I need to change anything tactically then I will do it straight away."

Varley was going to rest players when the game was due to be played first time around, but now with the lack of games his players need the match practice.

He added: "I was going to make several changes but the players need games and match fitness so we'll be putting out a very strong team on Sunday. There will still be the odd change as we have an even bigger game at Enfield next week in the League Cup Semi Final."

Ian will not be taking this weekend's opponents likely despite Ashford being in a lower division than Gills Ladies.

He said: "I've said before that I expect us to win the game but it won't be easy. In a way it's their cup final already so we've got to be at it from the off and approach the game just the same as we always do.

"We prepare for every game the same and Sunday will be no different. They have several quality players who have played at combination standard or above, so it will be a test but one that we should comfortably pass if we keep up our high standards."

Recently star striker Ashlee Hincks rejected an approach from National Premier League side Millwall and naturally Varley was delighted she stayed with the Gills.

He said: "I have said to Ash before that I'll never stop her going back to the Premiership and she decided she wanted to stay which is brilliant for everyone at the club.

"Everyone has seen what a fantastic player she is and her consistency this season has been outstanding. I am obviously delighted she decided to stay with us and that just shows her loyalty and determination to get Gillingham into the Premier league.

"Ever since pre-season everyone has been looking at us because of the signings we made and as a result of this there has been a lot of focus on our players and I am glad we've been able to keep everyone from signing for so called bigger clubs.

"Everyone can see what we are trying to do at Gills and if we can achieve promotion this season I really do think we can become one of the biggest and most talked about clubs in the game."
