The Reserves carried on their impressive pre-season preparations with another comfortable win in South East London as the comfortably dispatched Kent Magpies.
To be fair though to the Magpies, the game was a bit of a miss-match as it was their first pre-season game, and several of their players pulled out. However as the saying goes you can only play what's put in front of you. This game proved to be another essential learning curve for the Gills.
The game started off with the Gills being very comfortable and even went ahead after just 6 minutes when Charlotte Abbott grabbed her first of the game when she raced clear of the deep defence to easily put past the keeper.
This is when you felt it would be a massive score line, however just before the 15 minute mark the game was somewhat tarnished when the referee ordered Matt Adkins to replace Kylie Overton, for constant back chatting.
A bizarre decision by the official, especially as Kylie was looking very dangerous. Somewhat bemused and angry Kylie trudged off the pitch, and was replaced by Lauren Harris making her first appearance in pre-season.
The referee's decision changed things, but all though the Gills had a lot of possession they became waste full.
Lauren Harris created several very good opportunities for herself, and without a doubt if this was her third pre-season game she could of had at least a couple of goals. Anelle Massey was also firing from range from the midfield, and Amy Russ also came close on several occasions from distance.
Just before half time the Gills were awarded a penalty, and a chance to double their lead, but Charlotte Abbott did not take the opportunity and fired it straight at the grateful Magpies Keeper.
Half time came, and it was a chance for Matt to regroup the players and give them some wise words of wisdom, as despite the dominance their play was far short of when they beat the Addicks only last week.
Half Time 0-1
The words sank straight in as within a minute of the re-start Whitney Judd dashed into the penalty box on the right hand side and unleashed a shot that the keeper failed to deal with and the ball went into the net.
This gave Whitney her first ever goal for the Gills and one that she certainly deserves. This goal also settled the Gills down and they looked to really take the game to their opponents.
The third goal came from Charlotte Abbott, as Amy Russ did fantastically on the right hand side; she flung in a cross that caused problems for the keeper, who miss-judged the cross and it fell nicely onto Abbott's head as she claimed her second of the game.
The Gills were in full control of the game and had several other close chances, in a moment some would say of pure genius, Matt informed Chabs (Abbott) that she had just 5 minutes left to grab her hat trick before she was to come off.
No sooner had he said that the ball was played from the back that split the Magpies defence and from half way she took the ball through into their box and neatly slotted the ball home.
As she netted her third goal and the teams fourth goal of the day. A very happy Chabs came off and an even happier Kylie Overton came back on.
Kent Magpies finally had an attack that caused problems as they broke down the Gills left hand side; however a superb last ditch sliding tackle by Louise Jackson forced a corner, the resulting corner cause problems. The Gills failed to clear the first ball, and their striker shot from six yards out, only for Whitney Judd to head it off of the line.
The fifth goal came soon after and it was another first goal, this time for Tami, whose hard work all game finally paid off when some fine individual work in the Magpies box evaded several defenders and gave her a shooting opportunity which she took with great aplomb.
Tami celebrated her first goal with the Gills with a celebratory jig, to which the Gills will hope she be doing more this season.
As the game petered out, Kylie Overton got on the score sheet as since she came on as a second half substitute she produced some fantastic football, her goal rounded off a good but frustrating day for the Gills.
Without doubt the Gills should have won this game by a more comfortable margin than the six goals they did score, and had Kylie not been so harshly removed from the pitch she would probably have had another couple of goals.
The pleasing thing was the chances they created, on another day Russ, Massey & Harris would of all had hat tricks, but they are getting into the right positions.
The one concern though would be that three games in Ruth Jackson has only really had a penalty against Charlton to trouble her, however with the Hammers on the horizon that will be a test that the Gills need.
