Docherty: "I Felt We Deserved At Least A Point."
Gillingham Assistant Manager Mick Docherty is happy with the point picked up against AFC Bournemouth in the final away match of the season.
The Gills extended their unbeaten run to five matches and the "Doc" is pleased to see the good run continue: "I
felt we deserved at least a point, particularly after our first half performance. It's just a shame that we didn't turn our supremacy into goals. Towards the end of last season we won six in a row and we were hoping to emulate that by winning our last five matches. With three wins under our belt and going one-nil up, it looked like it was on the cards but it wasn't to be. We'll just be looking to finish undefeated in our last five matches now."
Welsh international midfielder Andrew Crofts put the Gills ahead before Bournemouth striker James Hayter equalised and Docherty admits his side let the home team come back into the match in the second half: "They went very similar to ourselves and pushed Darren Anderton in between the two strikers and that caused us a problem because it was like for like. We didn't get to grips with it and we didn't release our players as well as we did in the first half. We took the foot off the pedal a little bit and backed off. When we do that, we cause ourselves so many problems. Having said that, we defended resolutely and the goalkeeper made one or two very good saves as well as important times."
Docherty took control of the side as Manager Ronnie Jepson was on a scouting mission to Scotland and the Assistant Manager was full of praise for his boss: "The Gaffer" trusts me. I've been manager before up at
Mick Docherty was talking to the Kent Messenger's Luke Cawdell.
