STIMSON: "We are going to have to be on the top of our game to get something from this one"
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson held his weekly press conference yesterday afternoon to look forward to this weekend's game with Swansea City. Check out the highlights of what he said:
Looking back at the last results -
Yes the last four games have been very good performances and we have managed to get a points tally. We now have four games left; some big games and none bigger than against, in my personal point of view, the best team in the division by an absolute mile, in Swansea, and we are going to have to be on the top of our game to get something from this one.
Swansea have the chance to win promotion at KRBS Priestfield -
It will make it a very good game because of the atmosphere. They will probably come here and expect to beat us three or four nil, like Carlisle did, but we are going to try and spoil their party and they will have to make it happen at their place a week later.
This is what you are in football for, for these crowds, the atmosphere and the buzz of it all. If you are player you want to be involved in and, speaking as a manager, these are the ones you want to be in charge of. This is why I came to the club, for these kinds of challenges and we will go out there on Saturday with a game plan and hopefully take something from it.
The Gillingham fans -
Yes, I thought the fans were outstanding in the last home game and at Millwall they were brilliant. They came in their numbers and their voices were heard. We will need them this Saturday because I don't know how many Swansea are going to bring but I reckon that there will be between 2 - 3,000 at least. So we have to try and match them on and off of the pitch. We are at home and we have to make it a cup final atmosphere and go for it.
An unchanged side for this weekend?
We will have to wait to the end of the week because, unfortunately, Barry Fuller broke two fingers last weekend and he might be having a small operation today. We will have to see how he gets through and see what the result of it is.
Suspensions
Mark Bentley is not available because of a one game ban. But we are fortunate to have a player such as Kevin Maher who can step into that position and we may put Georges Ba upfront from the start and really go for it. But we are working on a couple of things in training so when the weekend comes, everyone will know what is needed of them. Most of what we will be telling the players is "Go out there and enjoy the game. There is only one way to really enjoy it and that is to get something from it."
Team Spirit
Oh it is a hell of a lot better than a few weeks ago. Now we have got players who want to play for the club and want to run around and train. We have gone over it, and this is the last time I will talk about it, a few weeks ago when people weren't turning up for training, let alone run around on the pitch. Everyone who is in the 18-20 man squad that are training together at the moment, are fully focused on one main thing and that is to keep Gillingham in this division.
Two wins enough?
I don't know. I just know that we need to finish one point above the team that finishes fourth from bottom. Whether that is done in two wins, three wins, four wins we haven't got a crystal ball so we won't know. We will be going out there to win every game but it is going to be difficult because, like I said, we play the best team in the league this weekend and in our last game of the season we go to Leeds, who will probably be in the play-offs.
We are going to try and win this game. Sometimes you can play better against better teams, you raise your game. We have to treat it like a cup game and as though we are playing a team in the Championship, because that is what Swansea are playing like at the moment.
Simon Royce
Hopefully not. Simon went to see a specialist on Monday and had an injection, with that he could be back to light training after a couple of days rest if it has worked. So fingers crossed with that one that he will be able to do some light training and he might be able to come back into the team for the last couple of games.
Signing players long term -
I haven't thought about that too much to be honest. But players like Kevin Maher, I will go out of my way to get players like him at the football club because if you actually see him train and his quality, it is a buffer we have got here. He sees things that other players don't and we need players like him at this football club. If we can get him to join us on a long term basis then it will be fantastic. With Danny Cullip, we are talking at the moment and are just waiting to agree on everything. We are not too far off so it is players like that calibre that we want here.
Adam Miller -
Adam is ok. He has been training all week and has looked quite bright so I think he should be available. Obviously with his problem (hernia) the more he trains and plays, the more it flares up so we just have to monitor that. Looking back at last weekend and our decision to take him off at half time probably saved him.
Last Saturday -
Last Saturday I don't think that we played particularly well but if you look at our away games against Port Vale and Doncaster, we played well but got nothing from it. Last weekend we didn't play well and we got a point and we need points.
Bournemouth beating Swansea at the Liberty Stadium -
Of course, if you read the reports and the stats Swansea should have been up by six goals. But fair play to Bournemouth they got the goals in the 90th and 91st minute. If we do that then I will be delighted because, as I keep saying, they are a good side.
Counteracting Swansea -
I think what you have to do is force their keeper to kick it out rather than pass it to his defenders. They have a very good passing game so we have to try our hardest and every game you play your forwards should be your first line of defence. If they are doing their job properly then their goal keeper will have to kick it. If he kicks it then we have three very capable centre halves who should win the majority of those balls and after that we have to get on the second ball because they have got some bright players with good legs. We have to make sure we match up there.
Jason Scotland -
He does well. He plays there on his own most of the time but what he has got is good strength. He holds the ball up well and people support him. We have to stop the supply going into him. Most of all though, and we have worked on this in training, is to get the ball and make the pitch nice and wide and got to get the ball up to our strikers because those two that I pick will cause their defenders problems.
Last fixture against Swansea -
It was a great day. The first game in the League as a manager, we scored a wonderful goal early on and, if I am honest, we hung on. They had chance after chance and then in the last minute they had a dubious penalty, which Roycey saved. Hopefully we can do better than that this week in performance but, looking back , we took a point and we haven't took many other points away from home this season.
Danny Cullip -
Danny is great because as an experienced pro, he plays the game in the right way and that is the type of player we want to bring here. He leads by example in training and on the pitch. That can only rub off onto the other players around him like Simon King, Garry and even Crofty can learn from him.
John Nutter-
John has done a little bit of light training with us and we are going to see the effects of that tomorrow (Thursday) and make a decision on that as late as possible. I thought Barry Fuller did well on Saturday in that position. He is more a defensive player than John but I think with this Saturday, we are going to need a couple of defenders there to stop the supply going into the lad up front.
Is the problem area this weekend the left full-back position?
Yes because I am not registered. But seriously, we have worked on a couple of things this week and have spoke to a couple of players about filling in there and he seems quite comfortable in that position. We have a chance with John, a chance with Barry and if both are unavailable then we have someone else prepared to go out there and give his all for the club - and that is all we can ask.
Holiday Letters -
They have now received their letters and we are now waiting on their responses. We have done this because we are trying to make the players more professional. You should only have a certain amount of time off and then get back to light activity or start practicing areas of your game that you are weaker on. That is what we will be doing through that first month.
