STIMSON: WE'LL GIVE IT OUR BEST

Posted on: Thu 11 Feb 2010

Speaking at this morning's weekly press conference, Manager Mark Stimson confirmed his commitment to Gillingham Football Club and stated his desire to turn around the club's fortunes, "This is a fantastic football club with great support but at the moment we're at the wrong end of the table.

"I've had a good discussion with the Chairman and it was an honest one between two honest people. We're both unhappy with the position we are in and we were both unhappy with the performance the other night.

"He listens to the commentary on the Radio and I think that Radio Kent commentary is an honest opinion. Like me, he is very disappointed and frustrated by the performance because we didn't see it coming. He's just said to do what you do, get your head down and give it your best."

Gillingham's players returned to training this morning, after 24 hours rest and Stimson revealed they would start the day with a meeting to focus on the job ahead, "After the game, nine times out of ten, it's the coaching staff doing all the talking, you don't get a lot out of the players.

"We try to, but there are, unfortunately, not many that say a lot and, especially if you've played badly they don't want to say anything. We gave them a day off yesterday and then this morning we had a brief chat before the training session just to iron out a few things.

"One thing we had to do was show them where we are in the league because there is no way of getting away from the fact that we are in the bottom four and we want to be out of it as quickly as possible. We're in it together and we've got to get out of it.

"We've certainly got the ability to get out of it but have we got the know how to get out if it? That will be the most important thing over the next few weeks."

This is not the first time that Stimson has faced this position as a Manager, overseeing the club's relegation from the same division in 2007/08 but he is confident his players will rise to the challenge ahead, "This time round is a bit different because I think the players are different to those we had last time.

"I did think then that we would get out of it but I was proved wrong. Hopefully that won't be the case this time and we'll get out of it playing the football we want to play but also grinding out the results when we have to.

"From now on we can't afford to be flat. Someone has to take responsibility, on Tuesday people we probably waiting for the likes of Simeon Jackson to score a goal, for Andy Barcham to do a bit of magic from the wing but it might be someone else's responsibility now to take that on board and if they do, brilliant."

There's no question that the team face a battle in the coming week's and Stimson maintains that the only way to get out of trouble is to keep the ball on the ground and play yourself out, "Norwich are the best side in this league and they play the most football so that's the way forward but you have to have players doing it.

"The other night we set out to play football, get the ball down and pass it but on the night for whatever reason the players didn't deliver that. In the first half it looked like they were handling a hot potato. They wanted to get rid of it and get it up front as quickly as possible but that is totally against what we want to do.

"The way we will get out of this is to battle but when we've got the ball we have to show our composure. It's no good kicking it up in the air and being direct with a lot of high balls because we haven't got that physical power up front to compete like that.
