STIMSON: WE HAD A GREAT CHANCE

Posted on: Wed 24 Feb 2010

Gillingham earned a draw against Leyton Orient at krbs Priestfield last night but Manager Mark Stimson could not hide his disappointment at not taking all three points, "After taking an early lead with a decent strike from Jacko and Dicko following in for the rebound, you think, great start.

"Kicking towards our fans, which doesn't usually happen, we just need to maintain it and we didn't do too bad in the first half. At half time we spoke about what we needed to keep doing, keep turning their back four because we have a lot of pace up front and we could cause them problems but that didn't really materialise in the second half.

"Coming away with just a point is disappointing because we thought we had a great chance to get three points and go level with Orient. That's four points from six at home, if we can do that for the remainder of the season, we'll be set to stay up."

Orient's equaliser arrived in controversial circumstances and Stimson was not impressed with the Referee's decision to award the visitors a free-kick, "I thought it was a bit harsh because I thought Dicko knocked the ball past their kid and their kid's got in his way.

They've collided and if anything I thought that's a free-kick our way. The officials didn't agree, they think it was the other way round. The more frustrating thing for me is that the actual free-kick was conceded on the touchline but the ball was placed probably four or five yards inside.

"They say it doesn't really matter but it matters when the ball is being taken from a corner. If it's half a yard over, that's not allowed, so let's do it in the right areas."

More worrying for the Gills boss was a first half injury to captain Barry Fuller and Stimson is praying his right-back has avoided serious injury, "Barry got a nasty kick on the outside of his arm and he's going to the hospital now for an x-ray.

Fingers crossed it's not broken but he would have to be in a bit of pain for Barry to come off. He's very tender but hopefully the x-rays will show it's just bruising. He's as tough as anything Barry but he had to come off and we put Chris Palmer on. He put a great cross in right at the end which Jacko nearly got on the end of. So he is a good replacement to have.

Gillingham now face their longest away trip of the season with a visit to Carlisle on Saturday and Stimson is planning to maintain his attacking formation, "I think we'll play with three near the top because we want to get something from the game.

"They've got a few experienced players who if they are given time on the ball are decent. If you get in around them and especially at the back, turn them round, you can get joy and that's what we'll try and do.

"When a team loses by four they really tighten up for the next game and don't give too much away so it's going to be up to us to go there and put a performance on. It would be a great place to get something because it's a long trip back and we'd like a nice happy bus coming home."

With a large squad at his disposal, Stimson also revealed that yesterday's loan transfer of Jacob Erskine to Bishop's Stortford may not be the only movement from the club this week, "Jacob needs a month's football because we've only got a couple of reserve team games coming up.

"It's better for him to play some senior football. Touch wood in the next 48 hours Mark McCammon might be going out on loan to a League Two club. Stuart Lewis is also available for loan, "Toks" has also had his name circulated this week so we'll find out if anything develops over the next 48 hours."
