STIMSON: I'LL TAKE THE POINT

Posted on: Mon 15 Mar 2010

Gillingham picked up their fifth away point of the campaign at Edgeley Park on Saturday and Mark Stimson declared himself satisfied with the outcome, "I'll take the point. This is a hard place to come because they are fighting for their lives.

"They've got three home games in a week and they have to win all three to try and stay up, so we knew it was going to be difficult. A point nearer to safety is a point better than nothing. We came for all three but didn't play the football we played last week.

"Maybe Stockport didn't allow us to do that. The pitch certainly didn't allow us to do that but if you don't win you want to take something away and we've got another clean sheet and a point, so that's good."

County's pitch problems have been well documented this season and Stimson felt the playing surface was a hindrance to both teams, "It's not a football pitch is it? That's never going to attract perfect football but I thought the boys dug in and did well and we could have got one at the end.

"I know their Manager, Gary Ablett, and he wouldn't want it like that, he wants his teams to play. I know they share with the Rugby club so it is a hard one but do the League come down and look at it and say that they should play somewhere else?

"That wouldn't be fair on their supporters and I'm sure it's something that the club will look at in the summer."

The major talking point after the final whistle was the fitness of star striker Simeon Jackson who pulled up in the second half. According to Stimson, "His hamstring tightened up so he gave us the nod straight away to take him off. We did that and hopefully it's not too serious but we'll wait and see."

Fans were surprised to see Dennis Oli replace the injured Jackson with many favouring Chris Dickson but Stimson explained the thinking behind his substitution, "Dennis was on beforehand because he's been absolutely flying in training and it would have been hard to leave him out because he's worked his socks off and looked a threat.

"We've got to get someone else to try and help Jacko with the Goals but we've got enough strikers and hopefully over the next couple of weeks someone will chip in with a few, Danny Jackman might hit a free-kick or Adam Miller or Andy Barcham might pop up with one or two.

"We're all frustrated that we're not scoring enough goals but at the moment it's all about points and today was another point gained."
