HESSY: WE WERE OUTSTANDING

Posted on: Mon 30 Aug 2010

Gillingham remain unbeaten on their travels this season after a 1-1 draw with Morecambe on Saturday but Manager Andy Hessenthaler admits the team were disappointed not to have taken more from the match, "Football is such a frustrating game at times isn't it?

"The boys are down because we know that we should have won the game. We had some fantastic opportunities but we've got to take our chances. We made some great opportunities in the first half, and I wasn't surprised to see their right-back come off at half-time because he just couldn't handle Barch.

"They were better for making the change, but we started the second half sloppily and fell into the trap of going a bit too long because of the wind."

Gillingham dominated proceedings for large portions of the match and Hessenthaler felt that his side were harshly punished for a lapse in concentration, "We switched-off for one cross and they scored. We criticised ourselves in the dressing room because, for all the possession and the chances, we still have to stay focussed at the back.

"Lance's kit isn't even dirty; he's not had a shot to save. He's had to pick the ball out of the net from one header, they also had a header off the bar and then you hear over the Tannoy at the end that their goalkeeper has been named man of the match.

"With the volume of shots we had and chances created we could have won four, or five - one, on a different day. I can't fault the performance today, I thought we were outstanding."

One month into the campaign Gillingham sit 17th in League Two, with three points from their first four matches, but Hessy is adamant that everything is about to click, "We are the draw specialists at the moment, which is not nice, but we are unbeaten at home.

"If we keep playing the way we are, and creating those chances, then the results will come. The fans were absolutely outstanding again today, considering it's such a long way to come. I'm just pleased for them that we got a goal because they would have gone away really disappointed."

Hessenthaler handed debuts to keeper Lance Cronin and forward Cody McDonald at the Globe Arena and the Blues Boss was very encouraged by their respective displays, "Lance did great for what he had to do, he looked very assured and his kicking was very good against a tough wind. He did very well for his first start.

"Cody, you can see, is rusty but you could also see signs in the first-half that he is very bright. The fitness will come with a couple more games and he will cause defences a lot of problems. I was really pleased with him and the way he linked up with the big man."

The Gills now focus their attentions on cup glory with a midweek trip to Southend in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and Hessy will be taking the tournament very seriously, "I've never been to the new Wembley, I've been to the old one twice of course, but not this one.

"It would be lovely to lead a team out at Wembley so the match is important to us. Tuesday night's game could be good for the lad's confidence. If we go out there and play like we did today, at a high tempo, and create the chances, a win would give us a lot of confidence to take into the Bury game next weekend.

Hessenthaler is likely to make changes to his starting XI but plans to field a strong side at Roots Hall, "I don't think anyone has picked up any knocks today so that's good news and that strengthens our options when we pick the team for Tuesday night. They'll be two or three changes because we have a good squad here.

"Cody will get another game and so will Barry Fuller but we may give big Bayo a rest. He's picked up a couple of knocks and had to have an injection, before today's game, for a problem in his shoulder.

"We've got Cammo coming back from injury so he may well get a start, or Stefan Payne. We will use the game as an opportunity to change things around and give minutes on the pitch to players who haven't had much football over the last few weeks.
