HESSY: WE'RE A STRONG GROUP

Posted on: Thu 02 Sep 2010

Andy Hessenthaler prepares his troops for their third away fixture in a week this Saturday and the Gills boss admits that the midweek injuries to Cody McDonald and Andy Barcham have hindered his plans, "We're going to train at Bolton's training ground tomorrow but we need to wrap the lads up a little bit over the next couple of days.

"The frustration for me is that we've had to keep chopping and changing in the forward areas and now we'll have Barch missing and maybe Cody as well. Obviously, the big man Bayo will come back in, but if you look at the front line we've had no real consistency in our selection.

"Once we get that right, I think we'll be ok. I don't think we're going to lose too many games; we're too strong as a group. We may only lose once over the next six or seven games. The way we're playing, I don't think any team has pulled us apart; we've got too much defensively."

Hessy made five changes to his starting XI for the trip to Roots Hall and hinted that some of the new boys may have forced their way into contention, "John Nutter was great, in fact the whole back five were brilliant.

"Josh Gowling came in after being left out and did very well too, which gave us some pace down the middle alongside Sinclair. Kevin Maher did well too and he got stronger as the game went on so they have all put themselves up for selection.

"We just have to decide which route to go but the forward area is the problem for us so we may have to change our shape."

Competition for starting places is hotting up nicely and the Gills boss expects three more players to increase his selection headache over the next seven days, "Next weekend, it looks like we could have Dennis Oli, Curtis Weston and Stanley Aborah available.

"Hopefully they will get a run out for the Reserves against Brentford in midweek. I'm hoping they'll put themselves up for the Shrewsbury game so that will be a positive. It would be nice to get through a game without picking up any other injuries."

Saturday's opponents Bury are currently 12th in League Two just two points ahead of the Gills and Hessenthaler is predicting an entertaining match, "They are a footballing side. We've had them watched a few times and I have quite a few videos on them. They like to pass, so hopefully that will help us because we want to get the ball down and play.

"It will be a tough game because it's not an easy place to go, but then neither is Morecambe, or Hereford, but we went there and were probably the better side in those two games. We just need to take that confidence into the game, play the same way and hopefully we can get that win."
