Gillingham Manager Ronnie Jepson reflects on the fantastic 3-0 victory over Port Vale at Priestfield.

On the overall outcome of the game, Jepson said: "I am very delighted.  It is always hard to get back-to-back home wins.  We did that today and it is a very good three points for the cause.  It was special for the players, as they have worked hard.  Since the defeat at Colchester, we have worked hard down the training ground and have had a better approach about the place, which we want and which we will get.  I think people can see out on the park that they are all pulling for each other and giving everything that they have got.

"It is important to get away from the bottom four.  Everyone knows that it has been difficult times at the club with the budget and that we have to reduce the playing staff.  Hopefully now we are moving in the right direction.

"We have just won two games on the spin, so we are getting a bit of consistency.  We have a tough game at Bournemouth next week so we will re-group again, get out on the training pitch on Monday, and look forward to it."

Ronnie JepsonThe Gills have won their last three home league games and Jepson revealed what he has worked on: "We work collectively.  We work on techniques as individuals, but team players are important.  I do a lot of work on that and am a shapes man.  We know we lack quality in areas, and are not a Manchester United by a long stretch of the imagination, but in this division you have to try and be organised and, hopefully, you'll get the rub of the green."

Neil Harris opened the scoring with a wonderful goal that struck both posts before crossing the line and Jepson is pleased for the striker, he said: "It was a great strike from Neil Harris.  I am pleased for him as he has felt the pressure with not scoring goals.  To get off the mark today, with a strike like that, was fantastic."

The Gills had the opportunity to open the scoring when they were awarded a penalty in the 11th minute, which Tom Williams failed to convert.  Jepson revealed his thoughts on the controversial spot-kick and the sending-off of Port Vale captain Tony Dinning, he said: "I thought the lad put his arm up, but I am obviously going to say that.  I don't know what their lad said to the referee to get sent off.  When we missed the penalty, although they were down to ten men, it gave them a lift.  When you play against ten men, some of your players do not know whether to stick or twist.  I could not wait for half time to come.  We re-organised one or two things, and had a little bit more movement in forward areas where we could hurt them, and the lads came out comfortable winners in the end."

Martin Foyle was also sent from the dugout by referee Mr Stroud and Jepson revealed he would back his Port Vale counterpart, he said: "I thought it was harsh.  Martin didn't swear or say anything in an aggressive manner, he just asked a simple question.  I was quite shocked when he got sent to the stands.  I would back him and I'd be honest and say what happened as he did nothing untoward for me."

New striker Gavin Grant was named amongst the substitutes after Darren Byfield failed to recover from injury and Jepson revealed the deal the youngster has signed, he said: "We have signed the kid until the end of the season.  We have given him a chance and he will play in the reserves.  We can do a bit of work on him and see if he is up to scratch.  He has got something about him and we will help him on the training ground .  Whether he can step on from the reserves to the first team, that is a question for a couple of month's time.  He was on the bench today due to the injury situation.  Young Akwasi did well again today too.  You have to give these people a chance."

Jepson started his league career with Port Vale but insisted that today was purely about Gillingham, he explained: "The fact that I played for Port Vale, that had no significance on the game today.  All I was interested in was getting three points for Gillingham Football Club.  I have happy memories of my time at Port Vale under John Rudge but it wasn't about Ronnie Jepson today, it was all about Gillingham Football Club and the three points."
