Manager Ronnie Jepson looks ahead to Saturday's Coca-Cola League One Clash with Rotherham United here at Priestfield.

Ronnie JepsonRotherham come to Priestfield six points adrift of Gillingham in the league table so will be keen to kick start their season with a victory. This week they have added former Gill Paul Shaw to their squad and he will pose a real threat on the day.

Jepson, who welcomes Darren Byfield back from suspension, is expecting a tough game against a physical side. He said: "Rotherham are down there and it will be another tough game.

"They've just introduced a few players who they've brought in on loan and they had a good result against Nottingham Forest last weekend. We've got it all to do again and I only get a buzz if we get a result.

"Rotherham are again a physical side - I say that every week - and they hit the ball long into the channels. They've got a bit of experience, height and pace in the side too and it's something we'll have to cope with."

Gillingham are on a run of seven games unbeaten in the league at Priestfield but despite this good form Jepson was reluctant to admit confidence going in to the fixture.

He said: "When the lads cross that white line you don't know exactly how they're going to play. We've just got to be focused and get our concentration levels high. We won't get too carried away, but hopefully we'll be able to enjoy the result at the final whistle.

Darren Byfield returns to face his former club."There's a great atmosphere about the place at the moment - the lads are really working hard and they're enjoying their work. We still know that we lack quality in certain areas and we're trying to improve the squad as we go along."

On current transfer activity Jepson revealed: "We've made a few inquiries about certain players, but it's difficult because I think some of them are holding out to try and get permanent moves, so that causes us problems in itself.

"Like I've said in the past though I'm not going to sign players and stick them on long term contracts for the sake of it. It does me no good, it does the team no good and it does the club no good financially. There are financial restraints on us at the moment and that's been well documented.

"Credit to my staff though as they're out most nights of the week looking at players, whether it be for now or at the end of the season when they're out of contract. It's slowly, slowly, but we'll get there and make the right decisions for Gillingham Football Club.

"If I thought a player was worth a certain fee then I'd ask the chairman, but at this moment in time we're looking for a few loans just to improve us a touch. I don't like revealing names before a deal is done because I think it's unfair on the player and their club as if the deal falls through it leaves them with an unsettled player on their hands. That's a bit disrespectful to them, so speculation is no good."

On the injury front Jepson revealed that Paul Shields is doubtful for the match due to a thigh problem. On a positive note, Matty Jarvis has undergone his hernia operation and is recovering well. The youngster is also progressing well with his ankle rehabilitation and was able to walk for the first time without the aid of crutches yesterday (Wednesday). The manager hopes to have him back in the side within the next three-four weeks.
