Jepson: "It Has Been A Good Week."
Gillingham Manager Ronnie Jepson reflects on the 1-0 victory over Swansea City at Priestfield.
The Gills suffered a 6-0 defeat at Bristol City last Saturday but since then have beaten promotion contenders Brentford and Swansea at Priestfield, and Jepson is delighted with the week's work, he explained: "Yes, it has been a good week. The lads have responded in the right
manner from the Bristol City performance and hopefully that is in the past now. It has been a tough week, against two top teams who are running for promotion, and I couldn't have got a better response.
"The position in the league looks better but I think it is performances that I am pleased with. Obviously the six points is fantastic. I don't like airing everything out, but I asked the lads for a certain response and they have given it to me in abundance. I am pleased for them because they are good players and if they can do that, like they have done this week collectively, then hopefully we can climb up the league.
"The three points are important but what it should do, especially with the two teams that we have beaten this week, it should show the lads that they are capable and we shouldn't be at this end of the league. We are capable of beating them teams. It should give them a lift, as it has certainly given me a lift. The supporters really got behind them in both halves of the game and that was pleasing as they haven't had too much to cheer about this season."
Jepson was delighted with the result and performance of his players and as well as being full of praise for them, revealed what was most pleasing about the afternoon's effort: "The most pleasing thing was the way we kept at it. I thought we harried them front the front and we defended well from the front. The appetite we showed was fantastic and the desire to keep a clean sheet collectively was different class. Obviously you can look at little things that we can improve on, but that cannot detract from a good performance today.
"It was fantastic. I saw Gary Mulligan play for Sheffield United reserves and brought him down here. He is a young boy who gets about it and I think that sets the tone for everybody else. I think that when you have got a few of them in your team, it drags everyone with them. Him and
Darren Byfield from the front were harassing people, closing them down and never giving them time on the ball. I asked Darren earlier this week to get me another five goals and I want him to get 15 between now and the end of the season. If he scores next week, I might just put the total up a touch, as that would be smashing.
"I thought Alan Pouton in midfield was different gear. He had a bad cut under his chin but showed the desire and commitment to go on and last the 90 minutes. You can only bring players on and off so many times with the blood. That would've meant getting him stitched up. We didn't have time to hang about for stitches when we have got ten men and are leading 1-0, so we had Flynny at the ready but we didn't need him. Full credit to Pouton as I think that epitomises the team as a whole how they went about it today.
"The turn of foot that Matty Jarvis showed was fantastic. I think their defender was surprised with his pace. He's caught him as he has nicked the ball away and it is a penalty. Byfield has then stuck the penalty away so all credit to him. We had a few other chances as well. I thought Tommy Black got in a good situation, as did Byfield if he had pulled the trigger a bit earlier. We created some chances today.
