A first half goal from make-shift central defender, Mark Bentley, was enough to break Gillingham's goal drought but it proved just a mere consolation. Goals from the lively David Bell, Paul Furlong, and a second-half Mathew Spring penalty, earned the Hatters all three points. Indeed Bentley's goal was one of only a few chances created by the Gills. The home side were the better side and created chances from the off with Bell instrumental throughout. It was his good work down the left flank that led to their first chance. His dangerous ball found Welsh under-21 international David Edwards, whose neat turn and shot narrowly missed the far post.

Man of the Match Bell broke the deadlock minutes later when he received the ball wide on the left, cut in past Nicky Southall and Barry Cogan, and unleashed a well placed drive past Simon Royce's near post. From then on, the home side completely dominated the half and their pressure paid off in the twenty-sixth minute, when Spring took advantage of a fortunate rebound to chip in a cross over the advancing Royce. Veteran striker Furlong took full advantage and was waiting to nod in the second.

However, it wasn't all doom and gloom for the Super Gills with Bentley ensuring we wouldn't be leaving Kenilworth Road with another zero on the score sheet. Southall's 22nd minute corner was inch-perfect for the Gills player to leave his marker and direct a header past the helpless keeper. It was enough to lift the Gillingham fans, who had made the relatively short trip up the M1. However their support seemed not to be enough as Luton continued to forge chances and Furlong proved a constant nuisance for the Gills weakened defence all afternoon. The former QPR player came close in the 30th minute when he was able to control the ball on his chest and unleash an acrobatic overhead kick, which Royce could only stand and watch as it passed by the top corner.

The game was finally killed off in the 78th minute when substitute Paul McVeigh went down in the area after minimal contact by Bentley. The resulting penalty was dispatched with confidence by Spring and ensured the Hatters would finish the game victorious.

The goal drought may have finally ended, but the search for three points still remain as Gillingham continue to push for their first League One win of the season.
