WELLING UTD 2-0 GILLINGHAM

Posted on: Sat 18 Jul 2009

After three straight wins at Folkestone, Dartford and Faversham, the Gills drew a blank losing 0-2 to Blue Square South side Welling United at a sunny Park View Road.

The Gills started brightly and created the first real chance of the half after just four minutes. Andy Barcham raced to the touchline and pulled back for Adam Miller whose low left foot drive was gathered by Mitten at his near post.

Welling responded quickly as Dean Cracknell pounced on a loose clearance and forced a great save from Simon Royce to deny his well struck volley.

The home side went close again after 19 minutes with Cracknell sending a teasing cross into the box that just evaded the lurking James Lawson

Two minutes later it was Gillingham's turn to attack, Adam Miller's cute pass sent Curtis Weston through one on one but former Gills keeper Charlie Mitten reacted quickly to make an excellent block.

On the half hour a strong run by Loui Fazackerley saw him break into the visitor's box but he couldn't find a finish and blasted over the bar.

Trialist Jordan Parkes caught the eye again for the Gills and nearly claimed his second pre-season goal on 38 minutes. A weak clearance from Barcham's shot fell to Parkes on the left edge of goal and he tested Mitten with a powerful effort that the keeper did well to beat away.

The Wings nearly nicked a goal in the closing seconds of the first half Lawson got goal side of the Gills defence but his shot from the right of the box was acrobatically saved by Simon Royce.

HT 0-0

Despite wholesale changes the match remained an even contest with Welling enjoying the better of the action.

On 53 minutes nice work down the right wing presented sub Ryan Johnson with space to shoot and his 20 yard strike was well saved by Simon Royce.

The Wings looked stronger as the half went on and stunned their visitors in the 65th minute by taking the lead. Tony Finn's shot from the edge of the box was blocked by Royce but fell to Sanchez Ming who swept the ball in from close range.

Moments later they could have doubled their advantage as Ben Greenhaugh's cross from the left almost fell to James Lawson unmarked in the box. Only Royce's timely intervention spared the Gills blushes.

In the 72nd minute Rashid Yussuff made the Gills best opening as he broke into the box and tried a cheeky lob which Mitten was able to palm behind at full strength.

Soon after Stuart Lewis tried a repeat of his long range goal at Faversham Town and missed by inches with a ferocious drive from distance.

Five minutes from time the Wings found the net for the second time, Sam Long seemed to be fouled in the build up but Jake Hobbs took advantage and raced through and shot across goal and into the far corner.
