GILLS CLINCH CODY CAPTURE

Posted on: Thu 15 Jul 2010

Gillingham have moved quickly to bolster their attacking options, following the departure of Simeon Jackson, with the loan capture of highly-rated Norwich forward Cody McDonald.

The 24 year-old arrived at Priestfield this morning on a season-long loan deal and joined up with the Gills squad as they set off for a four-day training camp in Le Touquet.

Chelmsford born McDonald began his career with spells at non-league sides Witham Town and Maldon Town but it was his prolific four month stint at Dartford that brought him wider acclaim.

Cody joined the Darts in October 2008, blasting 19 goals in his first 20 league and cup appearances at Princes Park. Crystal Palace, Charlton and Reading were all rumoured to be tracking the explosive striker but it was Norwich City who secured his services in February 2009 following a successful two day trial with the Canaries.

McDonald marked his Carrow Road debut with an injury time goal against Cardiff City the following month and made a total of seven appearances for the Norfolk side in the Championship that season.

He netted the Canaries consolation in last season's opening day 1-7 defeat to Colchester United and bagged a further four goals in all competitions including the only goal of the game in the 0-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy win against Gillingham at Priestfield.

Gills fans should get their first chance to see Cody in action when the Gills take on Peterborough United at Priestfield next Tuesday night, kick-off 7.45pm
