HESS HAILS RETURNING KING

Posted on: Wed 22 Feb 2012

Manager Andy Hessenthaler was full of praise for centre-back Simon King after he played a second full game in the space of three days in the 0-0 draw with Rotherham.

King made his first Gills appearance of the season in Saturday's unlucky 2-1 defeat to Port Vale, and kept his place to help the Gills to their first clean sheet since the start of January against the Millers.

The centre-back has been out of the first-team picture - save for a few appearances last season - since the summer of 2009 when he suffered a serious ankle injury.

Asked if he was surprised to be able to name King in his line-up twice in a week, Hessenthaler said: "It was a little bit of a surprise but we've really monitored Simon because it's going to be tough - Saturday, Tuesday this week, and then Saturday, Tuesday again next week.

"It's like that Ledley King situation, we've got to protect him, he can't train every day so that's what we'll do. He'll have a day at home and then he'll come in Thursday and do a little bit of work with the ankle in the pool and then we'll take it easy with him on Friday.

"I'm delighted with his performance tonight and I think the whole back four were terrific.

"I think it comes down to how we manage him, and the medical team. We'll assess him on Thursday when he comes in. I'm confident he'll be ok and he is as well.

"I think he's got a bit of a spring in his step at the moment because it's been doom and gloom for him. He's a very strong character and he believed he was going to play again and in the last two games he's shown everyone that he's still a class act.

"He might have lost a little bit of pace - he wasn't outstandingly quick before the injury, but he's very clever, he gets himself in good positions, and he's very, very good with the ball.

"For me we've got the right balance at the moment with players in the right areas."

Any doubts over King's form have been erased with his performances in the last two games, and Hessenthaler admits that is no shock to him.

He added: "I'm not surprised at how he's done - I've worked with him, I've played with him, I recommended him to Gillingham when I was at Barnet as a player and I knew that this boy could go a long, long way in the game.

"He could have gone to the top but he had that horrendous injury problem with his ankle as we all know and it knocked him back for a long time.

"It doesn't surprise me that he's done what he has done in the last two games and long may that continue until the end of the season."

The Gills boss has made several players available for loan, including senior pros Matt Lawrence and Dennis Oli, but he revealed there has been no interest in any of them as yet.

"There's the two senior ones, Callum Davies, Alex Brown, Tom Brunt's already out at the moment and Dean Rance if there's a possibility for them to get out," he said.

"We've had no calls from clubs. I've just been brutally honest with the players. I've always been honest since I've been at the club, that's the type of person I am. I'm not hiding behind anything, I just felt I needed to do something.

"It's in their best interests that they are told early that they won't be getting a new deal. It may give them an opportunity to go out on loan and earn themselves a new deal somewhere else. I can't be any fairer than that.

"As long they don't be destructive or cause any problems, then I've got no problems with them. To be fair, we haven't got that type of player at the football club. When they're not playing, they're disappointed but I expect them to be disappointed.

"Matt's been terrific, he understands - he's 37 years old and I've made a decision. Dennis Oli has always been different class here.

"I've got no problems with any players here - unless they start causing me a problem, but we haven't got those type of characters here. If we get any calls for them hopefully they can go out, get some games and put themselves in the shop window."
