Gillingham's second string bounced back from Monday's 0-4 defeat by Brighton to see-off near neighbours Millwall by a goal to nil.
The matched was played in brilliant sunshine at the Priestfield Stadium, with Ronnie Jepson and Millwall manager David Tuttle both in attendance.
Bobby Paterson fielded a much stronger side than he did on Monday with Michael Flynn and Leon Johnson gaining valuable match practice after their recent suspensions and injuries.
The game started at a slow pace with neither side really troubling in the final third. Millwall were forced into an early change on 13 minutes when Phil Ifil limped out injured - Curtis Weston replacing him from the subs bench.
Two minutes later Gills broke through Adam Cotterill, he raced forward but sent a long-range shot over the crossbar.
Then a good move by Gills saw Mark Corneille cut the ball back from the by-line to Craig Stone. The youngster picked his spot but saw his shot blocked by an on-rushing defender.
Just after the half-hour mark the visitors came close to scoring but an inviting ball from the left, across the face of goal, was just missed by two forwards closing in.
With half time fast approaching Leon Johnson turned in the box only to see his shot, from Corneille's corner kick, deflected wide of the target.
Gills came out flying in the second half and almost opened the scoring through Richard Rose. He collected a ball just outside the box but saw his shot go inches wide of Colin Doyles left upright.
Minutes later Frannie Collin fired a free kick straight into the arms of the keeper before the feet of Doyle denied Gavin Grant who struck from just inside the box.
Gills made a double substitution on the hour mark with Michael Flynn and Leon Johnson making way for Charlie Glyde and Kevin Partleton.
Gills continued to press their opponents and create numerous chances on goal. Craig Stone saw a shot blocked from 12-yards, Grant was then denied by the keeper after he had struck a fierce angled shot from 14-yards.
Gills finally found a way through in the 73rd minute when Mark Corneille's in swinging free kick was deflected beyond the keeper by a visiting defender.
A minute later Danny Knowles made a great save with his feet to deny Trevor Robinson who had been put through Barry Cogan. Knowles then demonstrated brilliant awareness and agility when he somehow got down and turned a Robinson free kick round the post.
Chances were in abundance for both teams in the final minutes of the game. Grant fired wide of the target before shooting straight at the keeper after a neat one-two with Collin.
Then Millwall were inches away from equalising in the 86th minute when a deft chip over Knowles, by Cogan, shaved the far post as Barry Powell tried in vain to prod home.
In the final minute Weston put Robinson through with a great ball up field but the forward failed to hit the target as his volley sailed over the crossbar. In the dying moments Millwall's Kevin Braniff fired wide of the target with the referee blowing the final whistle just moments later.
