The Gills ladies bounced back from their defeat at Colchester with a solid 3-2 win at home to Leyton Orient.
The win sees the Gills remain unbeaten at home and the scoreline somewhat flattered the visitors as they survived what can only be described at times as a barrage of attacks from the Gills.
The Gills started brightly with Kirsty Woolard forcing the O's keeper into an excellent save after breaking from midfield. The home side maintained their momentum with top scorer Gina Payne going close and Woolard hitting the post after an excellent passing move.
Gillingham finally made their possession count after 29 minutes when Gemma Ridge slipped the ball into Gina Payne who calmly slotted the ball past the Orient keeper to put them 1-0 up.
The rest of the half saw both Payne and Anna Broad go close again for the Gills, while defensively they kept Orient at bay after a huge goal mouth scramble.
The Gills doubled their lead immediately after half time. The impressive Gemma Ridge again fed Gina Payne, who in turn finished coolly into the bottom left hand corner. That was Payne's fourth goal in three games.
Leyton Orient tried to battle their way into the game, but found both Kelly Seath and Jac Fiddyment in great form at the back for the Gills. Orient did eventually pull one back, despite the Referee ignoring the linesman who was flagging frantically for offside.
The Gills continued to win the midfield battle and were always a threat going forward. With 15 minutes to go Kirsty Woolard was finally rewarded for her hard work, when she finished some excellent work from Payne on the left.
In the dying minutes Orient gave themselves another lifeline, when a sliding tackle from the unlucky Leanne Stevens fell to Orient's left midfielder, who applied a tidy finish past Ali Smith in the Gillingham goal.
Manager Hugo Langton was pleased with his side's performance and said "I thought we were excellent at times today. It was important to bounce back as, for whatever reason, we had a tough time last week. We spoke during the week in training about how we would approach this game, and the players have delivered brilliantly. We could have scored a few more goals but the effort today was first class and we more than deserved our win."
The Gills Ladies are away to Langford Ladies this Sunday, with kick-off at 2pm.
