FULLER: WE HAD TO FIGHT FOR OUR LIVES
Speaking after last night's home win over Yeovil Captain Barry Fuller expressed his delight at the team's return to winning ways, "We started the game on fire and to be honest it's probably the best we've started a game all season.
"You've just got to give credit to their keeper, I thought he kept them in it and he made four or five great saves in the first half. It turned out that we were clinging on a bit in the second half but we'll take the points however they come."
"To give them credit, it was tough for them in the first half hour but they dug in and as it showed at the end we had to fight for our lives and defend really well. Obviously we've done that and it's another clean sheet and three points."
The visitors had one man sent off and a rash of bookings but Fuller felt the conditions dictated the physical nature of the game, adding "The forecast was for heavy rain and we thought we could do without that but the wind stayed away. They are tough conditions and you know you have to be up for a bit of a battle but I like that sort of thing.
"They obviously know that we play good football at home so maybe they knew that they had to get tight and press us and it caused some great tackles and a couple of melees in the middle of the park. I don't think the weather helped and I'm just pleased that I didn't get on the receiving end of one."
Fuller came closest yet to opening his account for the Gills, striking the post with a cute free kick but remains convinced that goal is coming soon, "It's been about three years since I last scored and I was half celebrating as soon as it hit the inside of the post but it wasn't to be. The same man got the same headlines again by scoring a goal."
Gillingham face Burton in the cup this weekend and the skipper is looking forward to the tie after missing out on last season's clash with Aston Villa, Fuller admitted "It was a massive blow and I think the start of a run of about six weeks bad luck for me.
"I was sent off against Brentford, missed the Villa game and didn't come back until February after catching pneumonia. That was a bit of a bad time for me but hopefully it will be better this year.
"If you're not up for the FA Cup then you're obviously not passionate enough to play football, it's the tournament that everyone wants to play in and progress as far as possible. If we can start the game like we did against Yeovil I think we can get the right result on Saturday."
Barry is no stranger to the Brewers and knows his side face a fierce battle to progress to Round Three, "I've played against them a few times when I was at Stevenage in the Conference and you know what you're going to get from them.
"They work for 90 minutes and they won't give up even if they're three or four nil down. We know they are going to come here, roll their sleeves up and have a go so if we're not up to the challenge we'll find it hard."
