BARCHAM: DELIGHTED TO BE BACK

Posted on: Sun 07 Mar 2010

After a spell on the bench, Andy Barcham made a welcome return to the starting XI in Saturday's 0-0 defeat of Huddersfield and, speaking after the final whistle, the Gills winger stressed the importance of the victory, "We're obviously delighted with the three points, it's a big three points and we really needed them.

"Everyone knows that if you put a few wins together you can pull yourself away from the relegation zone and that's what we're looking to do. We've been working hard all week and we know, from when we played them at their ground, that they are a good footballing side and if you give them the time and space to play they will do that.

"We came out of the blocks really flying, and I don't think they liked it. You could see that straight away from the start and when you see that that's working you want to do it more. That's what we did and we've gone on to win the game."

Gillingham made the perfect start, taking an early lead through Simeon Jackson and Barcham explained that the performance was something the team had worked on extensively in training last week,

"Robbo and the Gaffer have been showing us videos of how much we were sitting-off them at their place, so, what we tried to do was get in their face, and stop them from playing. I think we did that really well this afternoon and I think the first goal came from Millsy pressuring them down and Jacko obviously did his thing which got us off to a good start.

"Everyone knows that we've got good attacking players but we've got to do it right from the front and defend well. That's what we've been working on in training this week, stopping people from playing, and I think it really worked today."

Barcham has endured a frustrating few weeks after losing his place in the side but admits that the players can see the benefit of improved competition in the squad, "I've been waiting for my chance and the gaffer said I was going to be involved today so I was delighted to be back in the frame.

"To get a win is good for me and the boys, because it's just what we needed. We've got a lot of players that have come in and everyone is fighting for places. I've had a spell on the sidelines, I know what it's like and nobody wants to be there.

"But it's all good for the team because everyone is fighting and trying to be on top of their game so they don't lose their place next week."

The Gills now have a week to prepare for next week's trip to bottom-placed Stockport County and Barcham believes that the team can finally chalk up their first away win of the campaign, at Edgeley Park.

"We've been a bit nervy in a few games lately but this is the business end of the season and you can't afford to do that. We've got to look on to the next game and try and get as many points as we can because the last thing we want is to be heading back to League Two.

"We've got to start winning away from home at Stockport because it's no good turning over Huddersfield at your home ground and then losing away. We've got to go there now and hopefully get back to back wins that can push us up the table.

"We've said that time and time again this season, when we perform really well at a home, and then go away for what looks like a winnable game and come unstuck. We're not sure why but hopefully on Saturday we can put that to bed."
