Adam Miller's early headed goal set Gillingham on the road to victory against Leeds United on Saturday and the midfielder admits even the players couldn't believe the manner in which they swept aside their visitors in the first half. "I don't think a lot of people expected that today.
"Obviously you don't go out with the intention to lose but the start we had and the way we went at it was like Huddersfield all over again, or Millwall when we played them down here.
"The Gaffer made a good point in the dressing room before the game that we haven't lost at home to any of the top seven. The record at home is unbelievable and if we could have had half of that away from home we'd be on our holidays by now.
"It was a brilliant day. The crowd was unbelievable, so loud. I know there were 9-10,000 here but it sounded like double that. To win against Leeds at such a crucial point of the season is just unbelievable.
"It's huge for the confidence but it must have an effect on the teams around us two. They must have thought that's it, we've jumped above Gillingham then been bowled over by that result. So, not only does it give us a confidence boost it knocks the stuffing out of other teams."
The visitors set up a nervy second-half with a Luciano Becchio strike seconds before half time and Miller explained the teams thinking at the break. "It was the worst time for them to score even though we were still 3-1 up.
"We knew they were going to get the biggest you-know-what of their lives from their Manager so the Gaffer just urged us to do the same things in the second half."
Despite a second-half penalty strike from Jermain Beckford, the Gills hung on for the points and Miller admits it was an exhausting encounter, "I was absolutely knackered at the end. It was hard graft and the heat doesn't help.
"You try to hydrate as much as possible and eat as much good food but the key is inner strength. You need that because at times like this, if you're not going to produce then there's no point being here.
"I've always wanted to score goals and now because I've had more of a regular settled period in the team, the confidence is there. The Gaffer backed me in midweek and it's nice to know.
With 47 points in the bag Gillingham have taken a big step towards League One survival but face a tough challenge next week when they travel to the Champions elect, "I think Norwich are a great team and I really like the way they play.
"They could either be in a party mood where they play it around and try to steamroller us or they might take the foot off the gas. We just need to keep our own house in order, disregard what they've done because our season is still ongoing.
"A lot of people would probably say that they would take a point at Norwich and I think, if we could achieve that, it would be very well received. We just need to go and roll our sleeves up and do exactly what we've done today.
"I really do think we'll stay up. We've got a good togetherness at the minute, there's good banter and I think that's important. Togetherness is so important and I don't really think we had that the year that we went down.
