HOWE: IT WAS A GOOD WIN

Posted on: Mon 03 May 2010

Goal hero Rene Howe reflected the mood in the Gills dressing room on Saturday when he admitted the team's joy at beating Southampton was tinged with frustration at a job half done, "It was a good win, the lads battled hard and it's disappointing that the other results didn't go our way.

"I didn't realise until I was sitting down in the changing rooms and a few lads walked in at the end and they were a bit down about it. They said Tranmere had won so that was a bit of a downer. But we won; we played well, now all we need to do is get a point away from home.

"We've done that before, we just need to get that elusive win, I guess. If the other teams don't win as well we're obviously safe but hopefully we'll go out next week and get that win.

Howe opened the scoring for the Gills, netting his second in club colours and was clearly delighted to be back on the score sheet, "It means a lot to me. I've struggled to score but my performances have been good, so I haven't really been that bothered about it but to score today was good.

"Perhaps if someone wasn't coming to the games they might think what has he done? But everyone whose been watching and playing around me knows that I do other things, bring people into play, assists, that type of thing."

Gillingham raced into a two goal lead but were pegged back in the second-half but Howe believes the defence deserve a big slice of the credit, "Obviously Rickie Lambert is a top goal-scorer, so as soon as he came on, we knew we had to set up shop a little bit because they would start to drop balls into the box.

"I think the lads at the back defended well. Barring their goal which I think was our own fault for not clearing our lines. I think that's been a big thing throughout the season, not clearing our lines properly but apart from that one mistake you can't fault the lads defending today."

The Gills home form has been sensational this season in stark contrast to their form on the road and the powerful striker is confident the team can turn things round, I think that once we've got that first away win, out the way, all the demons will be exorcised and then we'll go on to do well in this division.

"If you win your first away game at the start of the season, it sets you up. It's not our home form that's been the issue but zero away wins is definitely a problem."

Howe has made a big impact since arriving on loan from Peterborough in January and the popular forward is hopeful that the move can become permanent in the summer, "We've sat down and had a little chat and now I think we're waiting for the two clubs to maybe agree something. If I can get my personal terms sorted out then why not, it's a good club.
