AKINFENWA: IT WAS MY GOAL

Posted on: Mon 09 Aug 2010

Summer signing Adebayo Akinfenwa crowned his Priestfield debut with a goal against Cheltenham on Saturday and, despite a healthy deflection, the giant striker is definitely claiming the goal, "It was my goal all day, every day.

"Jack Payne's got a good throw, I've got a flick on and it went straight in, so I'm keeping it. I'm happy with the goal because obviously strikers are judged on scoring goals. It's always nice to score on your debut because the fans showed me love and it's good to be able to pay them back with a goal.

"I like playing Cheltenham. I wish I could play them every week. I scored three times past them last season and as long as I can keep scoring I'll be happy."

Bayo has a prolific goal-scoring record at League Two level and he's adamant that there are plenty more goals in his locker, "I know that once I'm on the pitch for a fair bit, I'm going to score. I'll get goals. Hopefully, by the grace of god, I stay fit, but I'm always confident I'll score goals.

"Whenever the Gaffer needs me I'm ready to go. I'm not a bench player so I'll be begging him to let me start soon. I don't know if I can last 90 but I'll start a game if he wants me. I'm not that far off full fitness.

"The Gaffer is working me, the physio is working me hard and that game will have done me the world of good. Every day I'm getting sharper and stronger, so I'm not far off. We've got a lot of games coming up and I think the Gaffer is going to make me do double sessions, so the complete Akinfenwa will be there soon."

It's fair to say that Akinfenwa is a formidable size, so his first touch in a Gills shirt was a bit of an eye-opener as Bayo tested Robins' keeper Scott Brown with a stunning overhead kick.

The man himself admits that the occasion may have got the better of him, "You were impressed? It was lucky I didn't injure myself! I guess it was the adrenaline because I don't normally get up from something like that. When it came over my first thought was to do a bicycle kick and I think the keeper put his hat on it.

"The Gaffer said to go on and just get hold of the ball. I'm still trying to catch up with my conditioning because I didn't have a full pre-season, so it was a bit of a test. He wanted me to lift the tempo and that did happen and we raised our game by a couple of per cent, got the goal and looked threatening."
