BAYO: IT'S A LESSON LEARNED

Posted on: Mon 23 Aug 2010

Lincoln city stole the points at Priestfield on Saturday, Cian Hughton securing a surprise 1-0 win, and Gills forward Bayo Akinfenwa knows that visiting teams will try those tactics on a regular basis this season, "I'm disappointed with the result. I felt they came for a draw, came to frustrate us and I think they did that.

"We're going to have to get used to that because I think that teams are going to come here and try and stop us playing, because they know what we can do. It was a frustrating afternoon for everybody involved with Gillingham today but it's happened.

"We ran out of ideas, especially in the first half. In the second half, I thought it was one-way traffic, they stuck behind the ball and we just attacked, but unfortunately we couldn't break them down. It's a lesson learned and we need to find a way to be more creative and more inventive to break them down."

Lincoln's game plan worked to perfection but Bayo believes his team mates have the guile to ensure that it won't happen again, adding, "Teams will do that, but we are good enough players to overcome it, we'll work hard on the training ground and hopefully we'll show that sooner rather than later.

"It was one of those days. They had something to hang onto so they were blocking shots, like Sincs' header and Josh's chance. I guess we could have played for hours and not scored today.

"Most of us have been in the game for long enough to know that you have some of these games, but we'll put it behind us, go away to Morecambe and hopefully get a win. We are a confident bunch and it will click on the training ground. We will do something this season and you can quote me on that."

The big man played in a lone striking role again on Saturday and reveals he is equally comfortable operating on his own, or playing with a strike partner, "Personally, I don't mind playing with someone or by myself, if it works.

"We have a good enough squad, that allows us to play one-up with Barch and Palms running in. Cody is still to come back and Stefan can step in too, so we've got the options available to change formations, if it's not working. I felt it wasn't in the first half, so we made the change in the second, and I thought we looked more potent."

Potential partner Cody McDonald is pencilled in for a return to action at Morecambe and Akinfenwa admits he's excited by the pair's potential, "Cody hasn't trained since I've been here but we've talked, and he is a goalscorer. We're all looking forward to him coming back.

"He looks sharp and he likes to pick things up in the box. The way that I play, I like to set things up, so that could be an interesting partnership."

If McDonald does make the trip to Morecambe next week, he will have to perform a song for his team-mates, a long standing tradition for new Gills signings on their first away trip, and Bayo confirmed that he had passed that ordeal at Hereford with flying colours, "I did a medley of tracks!

"I can't even remember what it was, but I did my initiation last week. We've got a couple more to come on Friday so I'll tell you how they go. If you're that bad, I think rolls get thrown at you, but, luckily enough, none got thrown at me. I don't think anyone would boo me because I'd have to see them after for a one-on-one.
