CODY: BAYO IS EVERY STRIKER'S DREAM

Posted on: Mon 30 Aug 2010

Striker Cody McDonald made his long awaited Gills debut at Morecambe on Saturday and was harsh in his assessment of his first League Two outing, "It was really nice to finally get on the pitch with the boys. I've been working hard in training this week. Unfortunately it didn't quite pay-off today.

"On a personal note I was a little bit disappointed with my performance. I know I can do better and hopefully with games that will come. A couple of times I tried to turn inside but it didn't quite come off. You get a bit frustrated with yourself and then perhaps try too hard.

"I feel good in my fitness I just need to sharpen up. As a striker you need something to boost your confidence and if I can get a goal maybe that will be it.

Gills fans have been looking forward to watching McDonald pair-up with Bayo Akinfenwa and Cody admits he's exited at the prospect of his new partnership, "It's brilliant; he is every striker's dream because he's great to play-off. He is big and strong, holds the ball up and he'll score goals, no doubt about that.

"He draws both defenders to him so that leaves space for me to run in behind. That's what we've been working on in training, with me making runs off him. It didn't quite work out today but that's the first 70 minutes we've played together and hopefully, in time, it will pay-off.

The Gills have endured a frustrating opening to the campaign but the on loan Norwich striker is confident that the results will come soon, "It's unbelievable, it just seems like everything is going against us but that's the way football goes.

"I know it will come good because we have a great bunch of boys here and we play well. If we weren't performing, and we weren't creating chances, it would be a bit worrying, but we are. I'm sure that sooner or later, a team is going to be on the wrong end of a big result and everything will fall our way.

"We are all good mates and we are confident in our own ability. Three draws and a loss have been disappointing but sooner or later we'll hit top form and it will all fall into place.
