HESS CONFIRMS EIGHT DEPARTURES

Posted on: Thu 07 Oct 2010

After a hectic week of phone calls and meetings, new Manager Andy Hessenthaler has begun to shape his squad with the confirmation that eight of the club's out of contract players will be released.

Young defender Tom Wynter, midfielders Adam Miller, Rashid Yussuff and Stuart Lewis and strikers Luis Cumbers, Andy Pugh, James Walker and Jacob Erskine have all left krbs Priestfield on free transfers.

Attacking Midfielder Adam Miller is the most experienced of the departing players, having made 97 senior appearances and scored 13 goals in a two and a half year spell at the club.

28 year-old Miller was one of a number of players brought to the club by Mark Stimson from his former side Stevenage Borough in November 2007. He made his debut soon after, in the 2-1 home win over Hartlepool and scored his first goal for the club against Southend the following month.

Persistent hernia problems dogged his performances in the latter part of 2007/08 and, despite surgery over the summer, the injury recurred during the 2008/09 season. Despite playing through the pain, Adam remained a key player, scoring six times in the Gills successful League Two promotion campaign.

He started 2009/10 with an opening day goal in the 5-0 defeat of Swindon Town but lost his place in the side after the arrival of Danny Jackman and was loaned to Dagenham & Redbridge.

Miller returned to the club in February and battled to keep the Gills in League One, scoring important goals to earn draws with Brighton and MK Dons as well as nettng a memorable opener in the 3-2 win over Leeds United at krbs Priestfield.

Stuart Lewis

Energetic midfielder Stuart Lewis followed former Manager Mark Stimson to Priestfield from Stevenage Borough in January 2008, making his debut in that month's 0-2 defeat at Tranmere Rovers.

He struggled to hold down a regular first team berth at Gillingham but played a key part in the club's 2008/09 League Two promotion run-in and Play-Off Final victory at Wembley.

Stuart also earned rave reviews for his performances as a makeshift right-back, earning the nickname "the Ginger Cafu" after filling in for the injured Barry Fuller in the 2009 FA Cup Third Round clash with Aston Villa.

He found himself on the fringes of the first team once more in 2009/10 but did manage to open his account for the club with a spectacular volley to earn Gillingham a 1-1 draw at Exeter in December.

Tom Wynter

2009/10 was a breakthrough season for young defender Tom Wynter who made his league debut on Boxing Day following Josh Gowling's dismissal in the defeat to Brentford at krbs Priestfield.

19 year-old Wynter joined the club's Centre of Excellence at Under-15 level, progressing through the youth system before signing his first professional contract in 2008/09.

He spent much of that season on loan at Kent non-league side Ramsgate and also became a regular in the Gills reserve squad. He began this term with a loan spell at Dover Athletic but returned to the club to cover Gillingham's centre-half injury crisis.

Tom coped admirably with the step-up to League football and, although not the tallest of defenders, compensated with his quick pace and excellent aerial ability. In all he made nine league and cup appearances for the club at either centre-half or left-back.

Luis Cumbers

Another homegrown talent, 21 year-old striker Luis Cumbers signed apprentice forms with Gillingham in 2006 and was handed his League debut by, then Manager, Ronnie Jepson the following May in a 2-0 home defeat by Yeovil.

He saw little first team action with the Gills in 2007/08 but was a frequent goalscorer during impressive loan spells with Maidstone United, Grays and AFC Wimbledon.

The following campaign saw Luis on the fringes of the first team, making a handful of League appearances and netting his first goal for the club in the 4-0 home win against Rotherham United.

Unfortunately a series of injuries prevented him from holding down a regular place in the side and he spent most of 2009/10 on loan with Ebbsfleet, AFC Wimbledon and later Dover Athletic.

Andy Pugh

Like his youth team striker partner Luis Cumbers, Andy Pugh was handed his League debut by Ronnie Jepson, featuring in the Gills home defeat to Brighton in February 2007.

The Gravesend-born forward joined Gillingham's Centre of Excellence at age 10 and rose through the system before turning professional in May 2007.

He gained valuable first-team experience with loan spells at Welling, Dover, Grays, Folkestone and Histon where he was a constant threat to non-league defences.

However, despite scoring frequently on loan and for the Reserves, he was given few opportunities to show his value in the first team and leaves Priestfield after making just six senior appearances.

Rashid Yussuff

Attacking left-sided midfielder Rashid Yussuff joined the Gills on a one year-deal from Charlton last summer after impressing Mark Stimson whilst on trial in pre-season. He made his debut as a substitute in the 5-0 home win over Swindon Town but struggled to make a significant impact on the side.

He was given a brief run in the first team in December and showed promise in the away matches at Huddersfield Town and Exeter. However the return to fitness of Danny Jackman coupled with Adam Miller's return to form meant that "Toks" made only nine senior appearances, spending the latter part of the season in the reserves.

James Walker

A deadline day capture from Southend United, James Walker arrived at krbs Priestfield on a free transfer in February as Mark Stimson looked to strengthen his attacking options for the final part of the campaign.

He made his debut in the 4-0 away defeat at Brentford and looked lively when handed a start in the 0-0 draw at Yeovil later that month.

However he dropped down the pecking order after the loan signing of Chris Dickson and leaves Priestfield after making just five first team appearances.

Jacob Erskine

A surprise signing by former Manager Mark Stimson, 21 year-old striker Jacob Erskine joined Gillingham in August 2009 after impressing in a pre-season friendly for Blues Square South side Bromley.

He made his debut in the club's opening day 5-0 win over Swindon Town and clocked up a further five appearances before being loaned back to Bromley in October.

He then spent time with Bishops Stortford before ending the campaign at Croydon Athletic where he was used as a makeshift centre-half.
