Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler has moved quickly to replace departing No. 2 Mark Robson with the announcement that Ian Hendon will be his new Assistant Manager.
38 year-old Hendon knows Hessenthaler well as the pair were team mates at Barnet during Hessy's season long spell at Underhill in 2006/07.
A powerful defender, Ian played most of his career at full-back but was equally at home in central defence or in a midfield role.
He served his apprenticeship at Tottenham Hotspur, making a handful of first team starts, whilst gaining experience on loan with Portsmouth, Barnsley and Leyton Orient.
Hendon made the latter move permanent in 1993, spending four successful seasons at Brisbane Road, ahead of spells with Notts County, Northampton, Sheffield Wednesday and Peterborough.
In 2003 he followed former Spurs Coach Peter Shreeves to Underhill and went on to make over 150 first team appearances in all competitions for Barnet before retiring as a player in 2009.
He also began his coaching career with the Bees, accepting the role of Assistant Manager to Paul Fairclough in 2007. He would remain in that role for 18 months before stepping up to the Manager's post in December 2008.
