Australian international Herd is a product of Aston Villa’s Academy, and made his Premier League debut in their 2-2 draw against Manchester United in November 2010. He went on to make 42 appearances for the Birmingham club, scoring two goals - one memorably in front of the Kop against Liverpool at Anfield in April 2012.

Herd has also had loan spells at various EFL clubs, and made his professional debut for the Gills’ current Sky Bet League One rivals Port Vale against Millwall in January 2008 during a two-month stint at the Valiants.

He ended that season at Wycombe Wanderers, and had subsequent spells at Lincoln City (November 2009 to May 2010), Bolton Wanderers (September to November 2014), and Wigan Athletic (January to February 2015).

Capped three times by his country, Herd joined League One side Chesterfield in September 2015, and made 25 appearances for the Spireites.  He signed for Australian A-League side Perth Glory in July 2016, before joining the Gills until the end of the 2016/17 season on October 3.
