Following his release from Blackpool in June 2010, Joe signed for the Gills six months later after a successful trial and made his debut as a second-half substitute in the 4-2 away win at Macclesfield.
Last season Joe scored one goal, a 30-yard cracker at Plymouth, in 39 appearances for the club but picked up an unwanted hat-trick, three red cards.
Born in Dagenham, Joe was with the Academies of both West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, winning England Youth honours at Under-16 and 17 level before turning professional at White Hart Lane in 2007.
However he didn’t make his league debut until going on loan to Blackpool in 2007-08 and made the move permanent, signing a two-year deal at Bloomfield Road in July 2008.
`On the Spot:`
Q: You accidentally dent another player’s brand new car in the car park. What do you do?
A: I would have to wait and tell them – I couldn’t live with myself otherwise.
Q: What is the best thing you have ever been given for free?
A: Football boots I think – I don’t get given much! They were PFA boots if I remember correctly.

A: Family Guy – it’s more my type of humour.
Q: What was the first record you ever bought?
A: Do you know what; I can’t actually give you an answer to that. I have no idea!
Q: Who is your best friend in the dressing room?
A: I have a good car school so I would have to say Joe Carter, Charlie Lee and Chris Whelpdale.
Q: Are you a PlayStation or an Xbox man?
A: Neither – I hate computer games.
Q: Its Valentine’s Day and you have forgotten to buy something for your wife or girlfriend. What excuse do you come up with to put things right?
A: I would say it’s been a stressful time at Football……….
Q: What film have you seen more times than any other?
A: The Green Mile
Q: Is there anything in particular you would change about the game?
A: No not really – I can’t think of anything anyway.
Q: What was the first match you ever went to see and what do you remember about it?
A: It was West Ham v Blackburn I think and my Dad got sent off in the first half - A straight red.

A: There is a good standard to be fair – it’s out of Charlie Lee, Chris Whelpdale, Lewis Montrose and myself. That’s the top four.
Q: What is the funniest thing a fan or supporter has ever said to you?
A: I get a bit of stick from the sidelines but people sometimes say `You’re not as good as your Dad! `
