The German initially joined the Gills on loan from QPR in November 2015 and made his debut for the club in the 2-2 draw against Port Vale at Priestfield Stadium at the end of the same month.

This deal was later extended until the end of the 2014/15 season and, having become a mainstay of the defence after making 29 starts in all competitions, manager Justin Edinburgh signed him on a three-year contract in July 2015.

A powerful centre-back, Ehmer made his professional debut for Queens Park Rangers in September 2013 as a second half substitute in a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough at Loftus Road, and had loan spells at Yeovil Town, Preston North End, Stevenage and Carlisle United.

Ehmer, who made his 100th Gillingham appearance against AFC Wimbledon on February 21 2017, was named club captain following Ady Pennock’s appointment as head coach in January 2017.

He impressively scored seven goals during the 2016/17 campaign, including the late winner against Walsall at the Banks's Stadium on November 19 2016.
